Steve McQueen intended to race a Porsche 917 himself with the legendary Jackie Stewart, but instead is depicted starting the race in the blue #20 Gulf-Porsche 917K driven by Jo Siffert and Brian Redman. The race-leading white #25 Porsche 917 “Long tail” was piloted by Vic Elford and Kurt Ahrens, Jr.

I came to know of Quick Vic via Can-Am. He was truly one of the most versatile drivers. Jim Hall, when Elford took over driving the Chaparral 2J sucker car, was amazed at how often Vic monitored the gauges. After a session, Hall could ask about Oil Pressure at a certain corner and Elford would immediately give an answer. Any car he drove was made better.
