Simracers Revival are holding a 70s Sportcars championship using Chief Wiggum's Porsche 908/3 76 a variation of the famous 908/3 that won the targa Florio and nurburgring races in 1970 and 1971. This version was a customer car with a 2.1L turbo engine with 490hp and an aero package based off of the legendary 917/30 and 936. This created a car light and fast that even with a ridiculous amount of ballast needed to meet group 6 regulations at the time, still won the Nurburgring race in 1976. In this league edition mod where every car has the physics of the Porsche 908/3 76, we've taken away that ballast to make a light weight rocket. Another 'what could have been' story. Lotus was exploring joining Can-Am as well: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a44840128/lotus-type-66-racer-revealed/
I completely forgot about this car, this should've been the car I begged Chief to make. I imagine after the flop of the Lotus 30, sportscars weren't too high on the priority list. Such a shame as looking at it's sleek curves, Colin Chapman's genius and Lotus amazing suspension and handling, I bet it would've at the very least kept the McLaren's on their toes. If you're a fan of Lotus you should check out stormgang simulations Lotus 23b, it's literally my favourite car I've driven on any sim ever. It's in beta being used in a league so the only way to get it is joining CMS racing discord
Yup, just noted the similarity. I think when Bruce Mclaren offered the first Indycar with side pod radiators, in those early years of the 1970's, the two formulas were very similar IN APPEARANCE! After that, both series diverged tremendously.
I often run the "early" open wheel cars at Indy with the AI at 110%. It's a lot of fun and the AI is well behaved and very competitive, one of my favorite RF2 events. I bias the setup for oval and the tires last for almost 30 laps. I wish i knew how (or had the time) to mod a set of cars and skins of early indycars with Chief's brilliant modular system. It's still a hoot of a sim racing experience just the way they are. I usually delete the 67 and 68 cars from the AI lineup for appearance reasons to get the early 70s effect.
Using the Openwheeler 70's Style mod. For indy offline I select the 70, 71, and 72 cars for opponents, online I select "early" cars from the server selections. The matched physics of these cars make the competition a lot of fun. I love the Indycars you added but they have different physics than the 70's style cars so we can't run a full field, they look amazing though.
