Since it was made as an update .rfcmp there was no deleting of .gmt files. And since this is not an rf2 issue, but a driver/hardware issue, it would make sense that only what gets rendered is important.
No. We did try exactly what you did with another track which crashed with a GTX 980. First we deleted just the gmts from the scn so that only the racesurface gets rendered. rF2 still chrashed. After we deleted all gmts except the racesurface from the mas file the track didn't crash anymore. We didn't dig deeper into it but maybe this could help you
