I'm going to dig a hole in my backyard, 3 metres square, 1 metre deep, with a spoon. I'm confident I'll have it done before the end of the year, but can't really say for sure when.

When I get halfway done I'll report back - but depending what sort of soil and rock I find as I dig down, it won't necessarily take the same amount of time to get the second half done (could get harder, might get easier... who can say). I'll obviously be closer to finishing, and I'll be more sure of having it done before christmas, but I wouldn't want to try and predict exactly when.

    --

Obviously I'm not really digging a hole, but it's a similar situation - except that despite soil variations it's probably still a more linear process than making a game. It'll be done when it's done - could be sooner than they're guessing, might be later.

What can I say Lazza... you have no idea about developing software. Even if we don't mind 'for business' statement.
Of course any dev team may work on project without schedule or even without idea what they want to build. And yes, in that case any prediction or even trying to guess makes no sense.
But I don't know single business project working like that. So, rF2 is the first one, or you just trying to believe in bs

I worked on military aircraft software development and upgrade (due to the OEM providing poor software!), a 5 year project which eventually took 9 years.

We of course had a schedule, it was a multi-million dollar project. Things happen, requirements change, specs change, an assortment of unseen problems, issues with documentation and certification etc.

It is a known fact, for anyone in the business of software, that software development can be very erratic. At the best of times it's near impossible to schedule let alone when issues arise. I find it impossible to believe that any proper big software (I'm talking 50,000 to millions of lines of code) development's schedule wouldn't slip to the right, and slip significantly.

This is exactly the kind of response that keeps forums 'interesting'.

Since you apparently haven't experienced any delays in your own projects, it must be very rare (if possible at all) for delays to occur. In fact you're so sure about it you'll just go ahead and tell me I have no idea.

Why are people so self-assured? How come "gee, I've got my theories but I don't know for sure" doesn't cut it on forums? Ah well...
