You really should have a look at the 1986 Celica GTO mod.

    Open wheelers:
    F1 Matra v12 1.0
    F1 Ferrari 643 1991 1.6
    F1 McLaren MP4-6 1991 1.6
    F1 1992 ASR 1.81

    Road, GT and Endurance:
    APEX FIA GT3 2012 (wait for 1.0, it's v.901 now)
Lola T280 1.4 (it's the 1.3 update with the sound and talent combined, packaged by Petra)
    RMT Renault Mégane Trophy 1.11
SEAT Leon Euro Cup 2014 1.2 (not as good as in Assetto but it is a very solid package and labor of love and research)
SimHQ LMPs - Porsche 919 1.6 and Acura ARX 2.3
    Spec Miata 1.32
Toyota Celica GTO 1.0 by 32_pixels
URD Endurance GT 1.8 (including URD Corvette GT3)
    URD T5 Touring 2013 1.8

Of course modders can and often get data straight from the source to build a car.

Lada is the most realistic car I have driven in rF2 because I owned one. The modder races them in a Russian championship and he is only an ametuer modder, the rest of the super cars, race cars, open wheelers etc I wouldn't have a clue if they are as they should be as I have never been lucky enough to experience driving those types of car. On the flip side of the coin, I owned a mk 1 Golf Gti and the one in rf2 drives nothing like the real one, but at the end of the day if I can understand and feel what the car is doing through visual cues, ffb, sounds, wieght transfer and tyre behaviour I don't really mind if some modders have a little "artistic" licence on the physics.
Another example is the Suzuki Swift cup, built by modders who own and race them in Hungary ( I think )
