I really really REALLY hope we can get some decent working copy protection. Not idiotic stuff like trymedia or securom stuff. Why not simply try to trust the community to pay for their rFactor and keep protection to a minimum? Cheers!
You can't trust the community. Perhaps everyone on this site will buy their rFactor 2 but on other sites an communities they probably won't. Trymedia is a good system and I think it should be maintained.
I have had no trouble with rFactors licencing or copy protection. I guess I hope rf2 will have similar system.
I d prefer to have different ways, in 2005 i had no creditcard so i had to ask a friend..... Today i have clickandbuy, creditcard, steam.. etc. Steam has grown up and became a really nice and fast working communityplatform which updates your game, allows you to watch which of your friends are online and playing which game on which server... as long as it is not a cd/dvd based protection i am with it .
I was gonna say, the TryMedia system has been pretty flawless for me. License code recovery takes minutes.
Old system was good, but I think anything will be better then Steam, the net code am sure will be great again and would be a shame if Steam was used to lag online play out sometimes and other problems that may arrive on league race day as they do with steam for some users on race day quite often.
I do hope that means you're considering Steam. Not only is it a superb platform for digital distribution (as I'm sure you know), the marketing potential is huge. SimBin have made it work on Steam, so it should be peanuts for your guys.
But for online game play smoothness it's not the best direction to take, it's a good platform for distribution and getting game out there easier, but many times over the years on league race day players have had issues with steam to miss out on a race, or for steam to cause lag in a certain game due to a steam problem (happens still now). I like steam in general but it's not free of problems all the time and don't think it would be the right direction for rF2 to take considering rF is still the best game out there for it's online capabilities.
Now that's odd, as I have never had an issue like that with Steam. Many, many years ago, when the platform was new, I did. But for the last 4 years of heavy usage of Steam (and I mean heavy usage), it has been spot on every time. I'm genuinely surprised that so many people seem to have problems with Steam. Maybe it's a localisation thing, but my team and I in the UK love it.
Steam is better then some other alternatives. The Trymedia route can be a smooth option, however I just built a new computer for myself. I go to reinstall rFactor and find I'm out of activations for my code. The problem is that since I originally purchased rFactor, I've changed my email and credit card number used at that time. Now I have to chase after them to send me new activation codes. I'll be sending another follow up email to find out what the hold up is this time.
Steam is a great platform, but sometimes it makes a bit more complicated to install mods (as you don't have all of your files listed like in normal games). A part for that, it would be a good choice. I still prefer Trymedia, as it gave me no problems at all.
