Possible to dual install seperate DX9 / Betas?

Not sure what the complications would be because of steam and so forth...
I havent heard of anyone doing this yet, is there a reason why?

The beta looks amazing but I really feel like my video card is in need of an upgrade or the engine in the software needs optimizing or something.
Would be nice to easily switch back and forth.
What do you think?

Considering the issues with the beta build, it would have made more sense to set it up as separate installs as swapping back and forth every time may deter some from trying the beta, which in turn means less feedback.
Also due to the fact that rF2 is used in league play, in the past build updates were avoided due to core changes until things were stable enough to allow leagues to use.
Case in point: Leagues using Enduracers may stay with DX9 build until that mod is updated and tested for league use.

I agree. live would be a lot easier with a feature like that.
Most of my precious time went lost last night only on switching back and forth a couple of times.

Btw I should wait out the optimisation of the DX11 engine and software before bying a new graka.
I have to optimize my in game setting further. Now my MSI-1080 with triple screens has to work very hard to get playable fps
even on and with the DX11 optimized tracks and cars.

When on the dx9 build, copy the entire folder (just the rFactor 2 one, not all the steam folders above it) to somewhere.

You can then switch the steam one to the beta, and running rF2 normally (through steam) will give you the beta, while closing rF2 completely and then running the Launcher (Launcher\Launch rFactor.exe) from your copied folder will run dx9.

Note that copying the folder includes copying the Core\data.path file, which may lead to both folders using the same data folders. In some ways this is cool, but it does mean player settings will also be common. So might make sense to change it (using notepad or similar).

Big thank you for this Lazza, I will be doing this. However is it possible to move the whole steam folder to another drive before I do this?
I want to migrate the steam version onto C:\ from my D:\ onto a new SSD drive.

I updated my main Steam version to DX11 beta but used the SteamCMD app to create a new install of Rfactor2 with the DX9 engine. Does anyone know if there is a way to create a third install of the DX11 beta using the SteamCMD procedure?

SS I moved mine to D drive before the DX11 update by right clicking rfactor2 in steam then local files and selecting "move install folder". It will open another window asking where to move it. Then one by one transfer each game to C:

You can use non steam version of Build 1098. Previously compare B1098 with B1108 to confirm they run similar fps.

You can then benchmark B1108-DX11

Thanks nipzon, for some reason I don't have the "move install folder" in the list so I've just gone with the
"rF2 Multiple install" dbens1 posted

Well, its me again, not understanding something that must be Obvious to anyone else ;)

Do you mean the name of "Data.path" has to be changed? The location? Whats in there?
I really have no idea mate and I'm not even drunk ;)

At the command windows, type the following after installation or validation using SteamCMD:
app_update 365960 -beta v1108-dx11-open-beta validate

Is this process suppose to take ages? Mine has been going for about 2 hours

New installation will download core and workshop content,

Update may download necessary files.

It's painful for slow internet connection.

lol

Inside that file (open with notepad or other simple text editor) is the path to your 'data' folder for rF2. Quite often it's just got ".\" in it, to indicate the data folder is the same as the install folder, but mine was explicitly pointing to my steam install folder.

Anyway, my process probably isn't the best, as it gives you a 'dead' copy of the base folder that you can't update automatically. Plus hopefully now that the dx9 has updated content the switching won't be as big.

The other alternative is to use a command line tool called SteamCMD to download a second copy of the game. Re-running SteamCMD will then ensure it updates to the latest build available on that particular branch.

How do I make the new install into my main install with the DX11 update?
My current main install is on D:\, the new install is C:\
