Recently moved and now have to use expensive (relatively) satellite internet. I only get 10 Gigs of normal hours usage per month. I used to be able to completly ignore bandwidth and easily downloaded to test everything here (cars and tracks). But I'm already at a balance of 6.5 gigs left and I'm only into the first week. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this limited bandwidth stuff and already knows what they spend per month in online racing?? Surely it's not a lot. is there a way to monitor usage while racing online?
Net Limiter logs all statistics but I am not certain if the freeware does. http://www.netlimiter.com/ Your IP most likely will only have daily stats. Log on at the same time they reset the daily usage. Join Online in a room the average size you run for a hour, close rFactor, don't use internet. Wait a another hour / till your IP updates usage, everything you see should be rFactor2 . Should give you a rough hourly usage.
had a friend with satellite here in aus it was shocking drop outs all the time high ping hope you have better luck than he did. he could not wait to get rid of it.
There is an inherent issue with using satellite internet for online gaming, and that is the high pings. When you consider that the information has to travel the distance it does just to give you an update of what is happening, you will soon find out that racing online will become a serious problem. The inherent lag will cause you to be late for your brake points, and will not show you exactly how far from the other drivers you really are as the information is delayed. I wish you well on your experience, but look out for the worst.
My friend use satellite internet, it has problems with ping and lag. The best unlimited cable. Good luck my friend.
Crap Jim Any other package options available from IP. Out here the new government has shelved our National Broadband Network and are looking for cheap arse options.
I haven't had the courage to try online yet. I hate disappointment!! After the new posts, I haven't gained any. Cable sure spoiled me. Only other alternative is dial up, and I swore years ago that if that's all there was, I would go netless. It's pure bummer-land I guess. Hey Durge, maybe your headed for deadly dial-up.
10GB? Oo Id used that in a day just on youtube alone. Just download a movie that was 8GB. Best thing for you to do is find a nice piece of rope and wrap yourself around a tree
Does that answer your question? http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/1183-Minimum-Recommended-Server-Specs-for-rFactor-2
That helps a bit, but not completely. It's enough info to belay fears of heavy bandwidth, (for user not server).
Your internet gaming is dead with satellite. I moved to Tucson Arizona over 9 years ago from southern California. When I lived in Cali. I had a 3.5 mb Cable connection, when I Got settled in here I found that living out in the boonies has it's drawbacks. The only thing available was dial up, and it was sub par at that. I had what was termed "paired gain" phone lines, the best connection I could get was 19.6 kb. After a year of that I found satellite net, a whopping 80 kb dloads... that is almost acceptable for surfing the net, and it would be OK for gaming... but like someone said before me, latency is not your friend. The signal has to go 20,000+ miles up, then back down, that is not a good thing when you are a gamer. Bottom line .. you're F***ed.
Agree. Satelite will not likely work with any type of online game. The loss, the ping, it's certainly going to kill your racing, and maybe everything else.
I definitely understand the lag situation concerning Satellite, I'll have to wait the 10 years for cable to get here I guess. (but that's my history of time spent in one location). Oh, well, what else is there to say. I know what else to say, improve the AI a little bit more. lol. At least I can still work on websites, do email, and log into rF2 forum.
You could ask the NSA or NASA if they could they hook you into one of their spy satellites or the Space Station, ( 400-500km ) I don't think the extra bandwidth would bother them. lopl Sorry Jim
