Wow - haven't followed this track development since early this year but after seeing the preview on virtualR I am amazed! Flabbergasted by the improvvements. One question, has there been any work to make the actual track layout as close as possible to the real thing. Thought it was a bit off layout wise in the previous incarnations from pleclair?
I don't think there has been. I remember remarks stating that the whole track would need to be reworked, as each section you fix wouldn't line up with the next, etc. You may as well build from scratch. Who knows, that may be taken on by another modder at some point, using the assets in this one.
Yeah it's very difficult to change layout of existing track, as once you offset one corner, everything else will be wrongly aligned in relation. One thing I would like to see is some "bumps" to be reduced. Probably they are not modelled to be bumps as such, but are remains from the early layout, which gives a bumpy feeling in rF2. Especially on top of hills it's easy to lose the car in few places because of this.
The basic layout seems pretty accurate to me. It's not perfect and will probably never be. There is no accurate data available to the public and judging the dimensions by youtube videos and some photographs is impossible. In my opinion the com8 team (Nordschleife) and mianiac (GP track) have done a fantastic job. DJC merged both tracks perfectly. I hope to get some feedback from VLN drivers to sort out the worst inaccuracies (some have already contacted me. Even if the track is not accurate, it is almost impossible to drive the 24h layout in real live. So this track may be a good opportunity to get a feel for this event). Here are some overlays ... and some shots with different fog settings (linear fog, especially for some VirtualR users). I really hope we see an improved weather engine in the future to get rid of this boring exponential fog.
The thing about track accuracy is that this won't be done. From the beginning it was a very well known thing, the layout is off. It is looking quite pretty and it would be great if both the old Ring and the GP track were as accurate as they're pretty, but it won't be the case. The desire and disappointment is clearly understandable as I'd feel the same with a track I liked but given the magnitude of things, and how this project originated, - and the fact the track is done - it just isn't feasible.
