    It's pretty similar for me too...maybe it's just a little incoherence with the shot exposure and the reflection that is too specular for a rough surface as the tarmac is. Mirage is activated by the tarmac, wet by the water...so are pretty different materials but you know. :)

    This is a little tweak of the same image with more exposure and a blurred reflection above the tarmac;

    now it looks like theres been clear coat, or even ice or some refective surface applied on the road. I hope I dont offend you im just trying to give constructive feed back. What about if you gave it a more sort of rough and rippley and uneven look, instead of a slightly blurred mirror look?..

    I think what you're describing as missing is actually heat haze in the air, which we don't have yet. :)

    And I understand your feedback, don't think I've ever annoyed even if it sounds like it, sometimes I'm posting in a rush and I think my inner monologue has a 'tone' :)

    Yea, when you see the mirage effect you'll always see it 'moving'. The distortion is somewhat vibrating, and thats the heathaze which sits just above the road.. Maybe, when that's implemented (if it will at all) it'll look typically like the mirage effect..

    I'm with Spinelli on that. When I saw the shot I thought "nice, drying track". But it turned out to be heat haze effect. So it's not that good effect if I immiedatiely thoght it was water.

    As Tim said, the missing part is the actual heat haze effect in the air. It should make it much more believable.

    Montreal is a great example. The long straight from the hairpin to the last chicane is always one big source of mirage (over hundreds of meters). In your example it looks like the straight has a slight constant dip (vertical curve), maybe that's the reason of the huge mirage effect?

    Yep. Every road mirage I've ever seen on the roads has looked like a puddle of water with a rippling surface, the effect enhanced by the heat haze.

    One main thing that makes mirage effect feel unreal in that screenshot is that reflection strength is very gradual there.
    Look at real life photos again and you will see that mirage seems to cause 100% reflection virtually on instant there.

    Another thing to remember is that mirage occurs in the air slightly above surface, not on surface itself. So you need to be looking through a layer of air thick enough. That's why you'll only see it when looking from pretty low above ground. If anyone's intrerested, I've described it here.

    And one more thing - this is true for both water and heat haze. Distortion of reflected image is much stronger vertically than horizontally:

    You could even skip horizontal distorion in shader and no one will notice :)

    Yes, I see a lot of it in hot days only on motorway while driving.
