I can't wrap my head around the fact this was new in 1975. Seems like it should have been competing against the 917s and 512s.

All those details like that are what people describe as "god is in the details". Also all that stuff increases difficulty of modeling by great amount. Personally I am fine with more simple approach, physics is what captures me, it has to have good physics.
