This is a fantastic video on racecraft. It also gives a really good guide as to how close to some of the real things our Skippy is. It is long, 1hr, 30min, but well worth watching, twice, lol. Hey, the junk coming out of Hollywood can't compete with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQRmYMlmdqM
Great video, thanks. Alot of the same stuff you can find in iRacing school which is based on Skip Barber, but this is deffinetly more in detail and better showing things in practice.
Although it has been posted already in Youtube thread I think more people should watch it, it's a great video. It's actually a boiled down version of the book "Going Faster: Mastering the Art of Race Driving" which I really recommend you to buy. I would also recommend downloading the video as it may be removed from Youtube for copyright violation if someone reports it!
Very interesting indeed. Thanks for posting, I`ll give this a detailed look over when I get home. Looks like quite an old video though... 70`s/early 80`s?
Glad you guys found it useful. I didn't know it had been posted already I don't really spend much time watching gameplay videos, so haven't been in the Youtube thread. I agree and I saved it last night after I found it.
Thanks for that video. Now i know i should not pick a blue Skip Barber when i am going online next time
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I have the book but rewatched this video about 3 times and it's been refreshed in my mind. I focused on consistency of the line and ended up finding 1.5 seconds more in my fastest lap with the Lola...simply amazing! When i save enough cash, i'm would love it if I could join the skip barber school at LRP. What they teach is so concise and so much common sense that afterwards you end up kicking yourself for not realising sooner. Nothing has really changed since the days of Fabio, Clark, Jakie, etc.
Nothing except that now they say you can and should brake into a corner as long as you don't sacrifice cornering ability
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing it with us. At the risk of sounding pedantic, may I suggest you get the book, Going Faster!. You will be glad you did, as it will address a number of additional racing subjects. I was able to get a like new, copy of the hardback book at www.abebooks.com
There is one point in the video that I get a kick out of every time I watch it. The reason is because of responses I have seen from many different people on different forums about braking. The point that is made in the video when talking about threshold braking is that the downshift is done solely for the purpose of being in the right gear for corner exit and not for slowing the car down. Countless people have argued with me over that little tid bit of information, including here on this forum.
Hahaha yeah, I thought that would be fairly common sense. Brakes do the braking, and engine braking is there to muck up the braking XD Giving the throttle a tickle under heavy braking helps a lot with controlling the rear if it starts to come round. It just helps to stop me entering the corner sideways if I've really pushed it late for braking. Also, you see in the MotoGP the riders bang down from 6th to 1st gear all in a teeny amount of time, and the throttle kickers and slipper clutches control the engine braking.
