I know Nvidia is announcing the 30X0 series tomorrow but i suspect my ageing pc would need a lot of upgrade to make the best of the new GPU. current spec: i7-5820 cpu, X99 mobo, 650w PSU, 1600 ram. so am thinking a used 2080ti. just wondering for those who had the 1080ti and upgraded to the 2080ti, was it a worthwhile upgrade? Of course i am going to wait to see what happens.
There is rumours that new 3060 is a little bit powerful than 2080ti, so wait a little when 3000 series specs and prices are revealed.
Depends a bit on the display setup. If its a non-4K you'll see some improvement but might not think its worth the cost. If its a 4K monitor you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. And it gets better after about 8-10 hours of use. I've got the RTX 2080 and it runs pretty consistently at 110-120 FPS and rarely drops to 90 FPS. Resolution on 4K is incredible.
A 1080TI can already do stable 4K/60 Hz (except some raining conditions) with graphics maxed out, with about 20% spare GPU usage remaining. On a 4K / 60Hz monitor there is not much point to run the game at higher than 60Hz. On my 4K / 60Hz G-Sync monitor. I cap the framerate to 59 Hz with RTSS so it always stays within G-Sync range. Now if you are lucky enough to have a 4K / 144 Hz monitor, a 2080TI or higher will surely be useful.
If a 3070/3080 offers the same performance as a 2080 Ti it doesn't make sense to by the latter IMO, those 3070/3080's will also have better resell value few years down the line. With the space heater 3090's 650W might be on the limit, but I think it's unlikely that 3080 or especially 3070 would consume much more power than a 2080 Ti. Actually with a new architecture and smaller process node there's bound to be a card that performs better than 2080 Ti while not consuming more power.
