So I just caught the interview with Tim Wheatley about Resume from replay. I didn't even see this feature coming, but it's pretty cool! I just loaded up a replay from this weekend and resumed it a few laps in. It worked perfectly at Oran Park with GT500 cars. This is a cool feature I'll use with friends just to keep a 24 hour race going.
Would be cool also if you could use this feature online... so that you could resume in a online game and each player could pick their car and continue from that...
You can resume a replay that was recorded online but I think what TIG_green is suggesting is allow the saved replay to be hosted on the server so and allow drivers to resume online rather than offline. This is the same idea I was thinking of in an effort to allow races to be resumed after a server crash or a mass disconnect.
Hmm... That sounds interesting, but I'm not sure how it would actually work. Seems a bit impractical but perhaps you guys have a cool implementation in mind!
I was thinking the actual server would do the resume using it's own replay. Then when people join they take over their position from the end of the replay. Then once everyone has joined there would be some sort of count down before the racing resumes. Then you just hope it doesn't turn into a crash fest due to some cars resuming mid turn. Hahaha. The problem I see is if the server crashed it probably wouldn't have a usable replay. But maybe this would work for a 24 hour race that could span a few days (in real time).
