    My wish list [Update #1]

    rFactor 2 Launcher
I find the launcher a bit unintuitive and frankly quite ugly :). I realize the game mechanics and stuff like that might have higher priority but the launcher is the very first thing the user sees, and the first impression of something is very important. For example, if I don't play the game for a while everything turns grey and I have to reactivate it. From a paying-customer-point-of-view this is annoying.

Also, why do I need to decide in the launcher if I want to play SP or MP? That way I can't do tests in SP which I then apply in MP without having to restart the game.

Different tabs have different design and also different margins from the outer edges.

I really think the launcher needs a face lift, that would give the game a much better first impression.

    DRM
Mmm, this is a sensitive topic. Ideally the paying customer shouldn't notice that there is any kind of DRM--unfortunately this seldom is the case. For example the TryMedia activation for rFactor (1) didn't work for me in Windows 8, so I had to use a crack to be able to play a game I bought. That's not how it should be, and that's one of the reasons I'm writing this section.

For a game like rFactor I believe the "monetary value" lies in its modding and multiplayer community. Most people will only spend a fraction of their time playing single player. Therefor I don't see why it couldn't be sufficient with simply a valid key to be able to play online. Why this activation madness?

Do you remember back in the days when you could install a game using a keygen, but you had to have a valid key to be able to play online. And most games are quite useless without the multiplayer part.

    • Install the game, enter your key during the setup.
    • Play the game! Yay. And with a valid key you'll also be authenticated against ISI's master servers when you play online.
    • No need to manage your account through the launcher. But of course one could have a system where you link your key to an ISI account if you want to keep stats or manage mod ids, renew subscription etc.

    Server List API
In-game server browsers can sometimes be limiting in terms of filtering, see game details, download tracks etc. A nice way to solve this could be to have a web-based server browser. I don't want only a web-based browser, but it could be good as a complement. If ISI supplied API:s to query the servers, get server details, people on the server, track etc. this could easily be built by the community, and during installation of the game the rf2 protocol could be associated with the game. That way you could also send links to people that they simply click to join the game you're in, e.g.: rf2://my.awesome.server:1234. During connection, the key you entered during installation is verified by the master server (and the account it's linked to so you have a valid subscription), and voila you're in. Unobtrusive :).

    Mirrors
When using virtual mirrors, it would be nice to be able to disable the car's mirrors since those aren't really useful in that case and I guess disabling them could potentially increase the performance a little.

    In-Game Console
Many settings are not able to be changed through the in-game UI but requires us to shutdown the game, change some file and then start the game again. To solve this an in-game console could be implemented where settings can be changed without a need to restart the game.

I'm really impressed by the work you've done so far with rFactor and rFactor 2. Keep up the good work ISI!
