    hi,
i was wondering whether FXAA on has a better quality-per-resource ratio than FXAA off?

I have a 5860 and I would emphatically suggest you turn FXAA OFF. My tests demonstrate that on my system, FXAA degrades frame rate by about 50 FPS.

This is quite easy to test for your own situation: set everything to lowest possible graphics settings (so there are no extra effects to consider); do control-F to bring up the frame rate measure; then try FXAA on vs off (you'll need to restart between tests).

I have ATI HD5770, and always use FXAA combined with AA Level 2. To me, the quality of FXAA is bit better than MSAA, and FXAA is not a performance hog like SSAA (super sampling).

Here's my graphic detail setting at the moment, that I'm quite happy with:
    - 1920x1080, 1280x720, 1440x900 (I tend to use these, nice to my eyes)
    - HDR ON
    - FXAA ON, AA Level 2
    - Sync GPU (eliminate "tearing" screen)
    - Circuit Detail HIGH
    - Player Detail FULL
    - Opponent Detail FULL
    - Anisotropic Filtering 16x
    - Special Effects MEDIUM
    - Shadows HIGH
    - Shadows Blur OFF
    - Sun Occlusion ON
    - Road Reflection ON
    - Environment Reflection ON
    - AI in field 20
    - Number of visible vehicle 20
    - Vertical FOV 30 (should be lower actually, around 25-27)

Also, I'm running FTNoIR in the background as my head tracker.

All anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering provided by display driver (Catalyst Control Center) were set to "Application Setting".

As the FPS? I recorded min FPS 22, and max FPS 60 (v-sync in effect). Minimal stutter, happens only once after start finish line and smooth afterwards.
