SOLVED Aussies please ........ADSL2 to NBN

DurgeDriven

Banned
I put off in the hope I might get some responses............

I have adsl2 with exetel line is 20m /2m it runs about 90% of speed 24/7 ( Steam downloads runs 100% speed )

I have atm :

500GB 20m /2m for 50month
Telstra standard phone 25month

NBN

My area is swapping to NBN, have not seen any final notices ? Maybe the letterbox got raided ( locks get dug out at units)

Anyway last week my phone just stopped working.
I have tried a 2nd phone but not a new one so I am not 100% certain.
ADSL works fine still.
Telstra want to charge me 120 if I am wrong.

So I may as well move to NBN now and bugger the phone fault hey ?

NBN Plan:

Have checked availability
Exetel 500GB 25m /5m for 60 a month
Local unlimited exetel phone 10 a month

So much for savings they went on about but at least it is no more.

Router/Modem

People recommended this modem I like TPLink had no issues
http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/?categoryid=219&model=TD-W8968#spec

But I already have this model
http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/?categoryid=219&model=TD-W8960N

Neither mention NBN and I assuming mine will handle the extra upload ?

Other question would be any chance trace routes could be better with NBN ?

Mine could not be worse ( I have exchange within 1 KM )
ISI is a long trace with 2 dropouts why I limit my room to 8 cars

I pretty sure that 250% upload increase should help with room ping/lag either way ?

Anything else comes to mind please.

If you don't mind, I'll dot point some.

* The fibre gets laid in the street, then hooked up to premises
* If it's a house then they install a box on the outside, thats when you know you can order. I believe the same is also true for units now, where before all the copper lines go to the buildings MDF(Main Distribution Frame)
* ISPs have an address checker to see if it's live, but you can also call sales if they don't have an NBN team.
* The packet loss would be down to Exetels routing. If they are a good ISP, you could call tech support to see if they could re-route or assist in another way. There are better ISPs out there, but of course you get what you pay for.

So much for savings they went on about but at least it is no more.
You didn't get free local calls before did you? + you will get full 25/5

I'm not familiar with that brand, but this is kinda how I felt before I read it: Anyone using their TD-W8960N on the nbn?

The routes may stay the same, it really depends if they are doing other behind the scenes work as well. If you mean pings, then yes. I've seen 15-20ms improvements on one connection.

Mine could not be worse ( I have exchange within 1 KM )

Line length is not the issue it was, you can expect 25/5 24/7 IF they are a good ISP.
Now reading again, i'm not sure if you mean packet loss or if you get a timed out message when you mention dropouts. If it is the timed out one, ignore that. It's simply the router either being told not to respond to those requests, or it's too busy to process them.

I pretty sure that 250% upload increase should help with room ping/lag either way ?

Not so much, as I said maybe 20ms for the tech, but the increase will allow a room of 20 instead of 8.
More importantly though, the connection quality is better, so less chance of seeing cars flashing or jumping.

Thanks Mat, I was hoping for a solid 12 in room is all.

We see I think I may as well get this I looked around can't find any better
with same limits or width, wish I could afford the faster plan.

Exetel everything I use has always worked without vpi okay if they keep that up should be cool.

btw yes Mat, the 2 timeouts were running a traceroute to ISI not online dropouts persay. ;)

hi, after some shopping around, I found internode the best packages, if you need assistance they are aussies too, +there.
Ive had the platinum 100\40 300gb plan for well over a yr, I got voip($5\mnth) plus my mobile over to them aswell ($15 mnth), I just brought the hware with me, a billion vdpx, cant fault any of it. speeds around 5 ping- dl 95mb up 35mb avg. All this is cheaper than what I got for years before with Telstra.

btw our server is here too ;-)

Nope, more to do with routing, equipment and how much data they provision.

I'm with Internode too and they are IMO the best in Australia. This of course means they aren't cheapest. To be honest, as you've said, 5 years without problems. Given the price, I'd stick with them.

exetel does seem pretty competitive now... though no isp was at todays prices when I signed up some 16 mnths ago.

Be at least 3 years for me to get nbn just hope that by then the node concept is adopted. With either copper or fiber option at the home.

Ordered 25/5 - 500GB and their modem, they said fortnight plus.

Thanks guys

lmao

After months of promises it is hooked up....................I think ?

I still have a cooper phone, they said it would be auto disconnected and account close ( 4 month extra bills for nothing )

Speedwise it is identical to my ADSL ......... supposed to be 500% faster upload.

I don't know what they are playing at.

Same speed same upload as other test above ...............

I'm on 70/70... Getting upgraded to 100/100 by the end of the month free of charge :)

As of right now, I live in a region of DK where most of the area is covered with fibre optics. As the place in Denmark with the most complete fibre network. It's not even a huge city or anything... The energy company has just decided that this region should be well-covered... Once you go fibre you never go back?

I guess it's because Australia is so huge... I guess it's hard to prioritize fibre on such a large scale?

I mean Sydney alone is 1.4 million shy of actually matching the whole population of Denmark :)

Maybe problem is I just noticed I have both accounts still active ( ADSL and NBN )

Now I read new plan .....says will be activated on the 15th ( invoice date )

I have swapped passwords already, it is working so maybe they are just throttling it .......... penny pinching %$#% lool

NBN is in early stages of roll-out has been slow and downgraded to fibre-to-the-node.

Internet entrepreneur and NBN Co board director Simon Hackett has slammed the fibre-to-the-node technology underpinning the government’s National Broadband Network saying it “sucks” and that he wishes it would disappear.

The Coalition’s rebooted NBN plan proposes to use a mix of technologies, including Telstra’s copper network and cable networks, to deliver broadband services of at least 50 megabits per second to 90 per cent of households and businesses.

The majority of the build will be based on fibre-to-the-node technology which uses Telstra’s existing copper network to connect to homes to a fibre backbone.

While FTTN technology is cheaper to deploy it offers slower download and upload speeds compared to Labor’s original NBN plan which promised to connect premises directly with fibre that would supply households with download speeds as fast as 1000 Mbps.

I could have got 100/40 for a extra $20 a month.

Copper to the node (if it isn't more than 3 miles away) will be still very quick 60/40. I have a node 200 meters away at a new estate but we(old town ) won't have connection to it until 2020 grrrr) unless l start digging now

Traceroute to ISI server is better.
