TV did only show the end of the fatal accident, but they said he tried to avoid to crash inside a ferrari which spun in front of him. Very sad. R.I.P. Allan.
Really sad to hear that. RIP Allan Simonsen. Racing is still vary dangerous and this is what simulators will never simulate properly (fortunately)...
This couldn't not be posted here. It's important to realise that even though we've come so far with safety over the last couple of decades, there's still a lot of work to be done. Evidently ACO are going to have to look at the way they treat their safety standards, with this and McNish's huge crash a couple of years back that he was incredibly lucky to walk away from. I've met Allan often he drove in the British GT Championship, and to lose someone so important to Endurance racing, and motorsport in general, is absolutely heartbreaking.
A very sad day for the motorsport. 2 people died today during a race. Rest in peace Allan Simonsen and Wolf Sylvester. My condolences goes to the families, friends and teams.
Very very sad. It looked liked a big hit purely from the car's damage, but the talk immediately after the accident was that he was conscious and talking to doctors. However that doesn't mean that a person is safe after such a large impact (internal injuries etc.). He drove down in Australia many times of the last 10 years. He was 2007 Australian GT Champion and drove in the V8 Supercar enduros at Sandown and Bathurst since 2003 (he had a stint with Triple 888 in the second car, amongst others). He also raced on the Gold Coast many times in support categories. He was a regular Ferrari GT driver at Albert Park support races too which is where I saw him race many times, always specifically took note of him because he was one of the few foreigners running in our series. Leaves behind his partner and young child born in 2012. RIP Allan Simonsen 1978-2013.
Every so often, the world of motor racing loses one of its lights. This reminds us that we should not be complacent and appreciate the danger that all these drivers are in - whether it's F1, Indycar, Nascar, GTR, Le Mans, MotoGP or even lawnmower racing. Deepest condolences to Allan's family and friends.
