I am returning to rFactor2 for the 100th time for the pleasure of the tyre model. I run only VR on Ryzen 7800X3D, 2080Ti, steam valve index VR.

I test VR on Sebring as that is most demanding. 20 Cars.

It seems, all settings staying the same, that there are dramatic performance variations by car. The best I have happened upon is a mixed GT3 grid (Ferrari and Radical tested) Totally smooth VR. Other cars don’t come close. Spark F2 for example is not playable. Is this an experience others are getting? If so, any recommendations?

Generally, it is the newer cars (relatively newer) like the Ferrari GT3 that impact fps more than others due to the many more shaders used for the skins and cockpits. Odd that the Spark is hitting you so hard. Are you using the VR mask setting? Not sure of the name, but it eliminates drawing objects outside of your VR view. Do other open cockpit cars also impact your fps?

"VR mask setting" I've never heard of this setting but would like to know more. Is it in the sim options or does it need to be enabled in a text file?

You have to enable it in the text file: player.json

    "VR Enable Hidden Area Mask":true,

Also, you look with attention in the same file, you have other options to change that gives better performance in VR, just look into the forums.
You are using a Steam valve, so you cannot bypass Steam VR, i´m using openxr. But in your case, steam VR was made to work with your headset, so not the same problems as with wmr´s when using steam vr
