    Tomorrow the first preview build of Windows 10 will be available. I will be downloading and installing on my main machine to see if all my sim racing stuff still works (mainly rF2, G27, and all my other drivers).

    I will posts results here so you see what works and doesn't; e.g. rF2, Logitech Profiler, video & audio drivers, etc.

    Is it even much different to Windows 8.1 "under the hood", or is it just aimed for the masses of people who couldn't take a few minutes to change some settings and install a simple TINY program and...VOILA...everything feels and looks like your beloved Windows 7 again?....

    First of all, change the name of this thread because right now it doesn't tell much about its content :)

    I'm thinking it's not much different from Win 8, but with a start menu :)

    I'll probably get everything installed except one crucial driver I need... then I'll have to reinstall 8 and it will all have been for nothing! ;)

    Installation went without a hitch. All drivers installed without issues except Asus Xonar DX. The drivers were beta for Win 8 to begin with, so I was doubtful. Had to manually install from Device Manager and I don't have 5.1 surround, but working in 2.1

    Logitech Profiler installed without issue. Going to install rF2 now and report back in a bit :)

    Was it installed from scratch (good) or one of those things where it gets installed on top of the previous OS, sort of like an conversion (bad)?

    Yes, format and clean install. I learned long ago to never ever "update" from one OS to another. Always clean install :)

    That's so awesome. I heard that Microsoft was doing the same with W10 as they did with the Win8-to-Win8.1 update where they make it a real pain in the ass to do a proper, from-scratch install. Glad to hear this isn't the case any more. Also, is Win10 subscription based?..I heard that rumor as well...

    I've not heard that rumor. Only rumor I have heard is that Win10 will be a free upgrade for Win8 users.

    rFactor2 is working!

    I saved my license (appdata/roaming) from my Win8.1 install and it worked. I did not need to re-activate! :cool:

    Yeah mate we're taking about Windows 10, not Windows 8.

    EDIT* If you think Win8 is crap, then you won't like Win10. Sorry.

    Fixed the 5.1 surround issue. Downloaded the non-beta regular Win8 driver and everything is working as normal.

    So far, Win10 has 100% Win8/8.1 compatibility. Start menu is back, no more Metro UI. Really liking Win10.

    Can you tell me why Windows 8 sucks? Win8 is capable of DX 11.2 and soon, I believe, 11.3 as well. Widows 7 is only capable of DX 11.0. Win8 takes much better advantage of multithreading. Win8 generally feels quicker and snappier. Win 8 is apparently more secure (who really knows though).

    Windows 8 is just a fastsr, more efficient and optimized OS than Win7.

    So how does that make it worse than Win7? If you're talking about a little button on the bottom left of your screen (start menu), then you can get one of those in Win8 as well, takes about 5 minutes. In facf my Win 8.1 looks and "feels" just like Win7. You would probably think you were using Win7 if you looked at and used my PC :)

    I would like to know what are the major differences between 8.1 and 10.. It looks pretty much the same except for the returning start menu. Probably the changes are nade under the hood, but could be also 8.2 name.. Why did they skip 9 anyway?

    early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

    if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
    { /* 95 and 98 */
    } else {

    and windows 10 was the solution to avoid that potential mess!

    I think people that are more into community and mobile devices like it.

    As a SIM os ........... I wouldn't take it to a rock fight.

    Workgroups 3.11, Vista, or W8 or W10 ......I don't which was worse.

    Now we have star struck people tell us how " AWESUM" it is.

    I dont care that you think your screen looks pretty does it run rF2 any better ? No :rolleyes:

    Simmers that swap out OSes for no performance gain and CPU and/or Mobos for PCI-e3.0.

    What the sim world come to.

    lol

    The fact that you've made up your mind on Win10 without even trying it tells me all I need to know.

    But thanks for your opinion :)

    Only one thing need be done.

    Open the command prompt. Type "VER". Tell me what it responds back with. I'll lay odds it says it's Windows 6.4. something. In other words, its Vista/Win7/Win8 with a few tweaks, but nothing fundamentally different in the main plumbing.

    Yes it does say 6.4. You can see it in the screenshot in post #6.
