Owen, did it produce a dump file when it crashed, if so post it here for Dev's to have a look at. View attachment upload_2024-10-1_11-34-57.png EDIT: oops we're in rF2 not LMU so disregard the above.... there should be a file called rfmini.dmp (i think), post it instead
Sorry to waffle on but just something for no one in particular may want to try this method for diagnoses / problem solving. 256GB SSD I would partition C:\ drive 80GB and make the rest D:\ This is so you can do 10 installs a day and have your steam sims and install archive ready to use. So many I see never attempt fresh OSes because there C:\ drives have everything which gets lost fresh partition. So when you do your second test install just delete the first 4 partitions leaving D: alone Click NEXT not NEW and your partitions will be identical.
Yeah I've done some bug splats in LMU. I was about to go produce a new one to attach to the thread. But was unable to. Because it's bloody working now! I don't know why or how, but when I went to go trigger the bug splat it just loaded right into LMU. That is brilliant in VR, I think I'm making the full time move away from my monitor now. Even using my monitor settings it ran pretty well, but it feels so good. I loaded up COTA and was actually slower than normal because I felt like I was at the track for real, so I had greater respect for the speed. Only got a couple laps in and figured I need to get back to work. But fired up rF2 and that works now too. I'm still fingers crossed it doesn't disappear again somehow. I don't know what changed. SInce I'd last tried I had unplugged the USB and DP cables from the Rift S. After seeing your message I plugged it back into the same ports. Perhaps it needed to that.
Yeah after your message I was thinking that I'd probably go that route. In an ideal world I'd have my OS by itself so I can do a fresh install without losing my work environment too. Though that can get quite heavily tied into the OS, so I'm not sure how feasible it is.
Wait, I rebooted the computer and it loaded up again. At this point I cannot remember if I had put the PC to sleep or locked it or something. So thinking perhaps I might have, but will monitor it anyway. Here's a successful trace to the main menu.
Seems to be pretty solid now. Am not sure what the problem was. And my appetite for troubleshooting is much lower now I can race ha. Sorry this is probably no help to anyone who happens to have the same bizarre problem.
Good one You know in effect a fresh OS would have done the same thing because the USB would have been reset which is the same as disconnecting and connecting and no one would be any wiser. P.S. I have the same issue with Delan Cam for tracking.
Haha yeah I have it plugged into a powered USB3 hub at the minute. With a button to toggle the port. Imagine if I did a full windows reinstall when all I needed to do was reconnect the USB cable. I think it was likely more than that, though I'm thinking it's certainly USB related. I think when I lost it briefly it was following a windows Sleep, so likely didn't come back up properly. In fact I had the machine asleep last night. Now looking at Oculus I have a red dot against the headset. View attachment upload_2024-10-2_11-0-45.png Toggle the USB hub button for the port and then: View attachment upload_2024-10-2_11-1-46.png Am pretty sure it was always green before though.. I was looking in so many different directions, I wish I'd taken better notes.
I had a system, about win10ish...that would NEVER recover properly from sleep. If it ran at all, it would crash. i eventually turned off sleep mode altogether until I got a newer system. This one, Win11 Home x64, hasn't had any sleep issues that I can see.
Yeah I'm never 100% trustful of sleep. But it's super handy. As it is, I'm sort of in the habit of rebooting between work and play anyway. It just clears out all the services that aren't relevant for what I'm doing. I could make a batch file to do it I guess, but it'd be a job to keep up to date. Easier to just reboot. The more I think of this, the more I think it might have been USB from the start. First install I plugged in the Rift and Steam asked if I want to install SteamVR. Thinking about how much I get annoyed by Guardian prompts in Oculus I thought yeah go on then. But then it tried installing Oculus as it is still needed. So I just continued with that. But I think ideally you install Oculus with the headset unplugged, then plug it in at the end of the install. So my first install skipped that. I then unplugged it and plugged it back in a few times later on. Which is how I found that unplugging it lets the games run again. Though every time I reinstalled Oculus I think I forgot to unplug. Looking like it's very much needed.
Proper love hate relationship with VR right now. Love it when it works. Hate it when I waste hours a night just trying to get out for a quick drive. Have a memory dump file this time in case it's helpful.
Yeah you should turn all that off imho Dave anyway, moreso today. In power options untick everything ( the 4 boxes ) Turn monitor off: 5 minutes Sleep: Never Don't use any CPU/GPU " performance " profiles. New gear does not need to be pushed, you should be reducing load not increasing it It is all about the headroom not pushing tower to limits just to run games. I have 7800X3D / 4080S I run LMU and rF2 basically maxxed out 36-100 cars I can't hear the tower running, it sits like only 60+C , I get matched refresh maximum fps and have more then 10% headroom. Headroom means less "droop" in fps and usage going up and down like a pogo stick. I am starting to think all these default settings, like game performance, VRR , power settings are half the problems. All I know if i do a W11 setup by the books like most people do my Lemans Ultimate won't even run for me ? imho simply uninstall, disable and delete everything, ever single thing in W11 possible, I mean every last tab and entry you check, think is this for my benefit or ? W11 will start running slightly better, smoother responses. that is my experience. There is strange thing in LMU, it is in startup but not startup in windows \settings\apps\ startup. If I install LMU fresh a startup is added to AVG Tuneup ? No sim no game I have has ever does this yet LMU studios think it's nothing because they can't see themselves. lol trust me it's there !
P.S. Forgot to mention after you turn off sleep you can reclaim some decent space for your C:\ drive depending how much memory you have..... Open windows explorer check free space on C:\ disable sleep Run cmd in admin mode powercfg.exe /hibernate off enter exit Open windows explorer check free space on C:\ If you enable sleep a new hibernation file will be created Then W11 hogs another 6.5GB you can free up used so "they (updates, etc. ) can work properly" even though your C:\ is 66% free....... lol Run CMD as Admin dism /Online /Get-ReservedStorageState Enter dism /Online /Set-ReservedStorageState /State:disabled Enter Exit Delete that Recovery folder no need, you don't want Bill recovering anything thank you very much. If you have 32GB you can free up 20GB with those two.
I'm like a week or so away from finishing my current project and then will probably reinstall windows (offline this time) but also add some partitions to my C: drive. Make it so I can easily refresh windows without all the hassle of reinstalling everything else. Hopefully. Also I think I'm getting closer to figuring this out. I'm thinking more and more it's a USB thing. If everything is connected when I turn on the computer then there's a good chance it won't work in VR. But if I first let the machine turn on and then connect the Rift (USB connected -> wait for controllers to sync -> DP connected) it seems to work. Also I'm finding even waking from sleep seems ok for the most part. So there's something in that initialisation.
