Windows 11

I am about to upgrade to Win11 from Win10 , has anybody done this ? i am worried that my various Utilities will stop working Simed v3, photoshop and of course Rf2.
Any comments will be a help.

It takes longer, but I would do a 100% clean reinstall of Windows 11, that is to say by saving all your data elsewhere or less temporarily, and all the applications and all the software as well as the configuration of Windows would be reset.

You would therefore have to reinstall your software and rfactor 2, reconfigure Windows and rFactor 2 and your other software.

To answer your question further, I have been using Windows 11 I think since the first month when it was no longer in beta so for I think a year or a year and a half I don't remember. unless I don't remember but I am pretty sure I have never had any specific problem with Windows 11, Windows 11 is just an improved version on a whole number of aspects of Windows 10 quite simply.

Perfectly compatible with rFactor 2, and all the software I use around rfactor 2.

I think the options regarding performance or graphics or fluidity are roughly the same as in Windows 10.

You have to configure them, it's important :

Game mode, hardware accelerated GPU scheduling, and possibly one or two things I can't remember.

From memory when I used VR with open XR, everything worked perfectly too.

Really no problem, just make sure to go through all the Windows settings without exception in order to disable as many things as possible (UI), disable unnecessary services (services.msc), startup programs and Windows graphical effects that are useless when you want to play in good conditions.

All this as well as reconfiguring rfactor 2 perfectly will take you some time for sure, but if you take an afternoon this weekend, you won't be disappointed.

Note that the Windows 11 user interface is better than that of Windows 10 without surprise, but personally I still had a little trouble getting used to it during first months, I was so used to the usual system since Windows 98.

And then, I am almost sure that in a few months Windows 10 will no longer receive any updates, its lifespan is over like rFactor 2 :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

pilauto,
thank you for taking the time to type this.It answers most of my questions, i think i will go ahead with the upgrade! before Microsoft force it on us.

Can only confirm pilAUTO message. I would add that if you work often with files (I believe you are or were involved in modding), that the new interface is very convenient to copy, move files from folder to folder (once you are used to it).
Cheers.

Honestly, the biggest difference is functionality and design.
I could set up W11 and you would not see any difference to your W10.
With tools like explorer patcher, Open Shell, Winareo Tweaker you can virtually make W11 identical to how you like your W10.
No software I have does not run in W11 at most you may have to run admin mode for setup or to change options in some apps at most.
Warning though there is a huge amount of stuff to disable, turn off and uninstall to get it smoother. Game mode and all the other crap needs to go.
Basically I would disable anything I could, more you do smoother it gets ;)

Windows Metro is worst interface I have ever seen but the tools I mentioned will totally transform that.

Personally I would do what I say to everyone going from W10 to W11
You can get a 256GB SSD for $40 AU
Disconnect all drives connect the SSD
Download W11 onto a 8GB USB stick
Do a fresh OS and test on the side until you are happy leaving your W10 totally intact.

Takes only a few seconds to swap drives in Bios.
IE: I would never ever advise to run dual boot, like ever.

The other advantage of this proceduire is you don't have to back up anything.
You can simply enable both drives in bios, boot the W11 and copy across everything ;)

Best of all you still have your orginal W10 drive to fall back on any time you need ;)
Once you 100% happy then and only then do you sign up for W11.

You can run and test it without needing to transfer your OS just yet.
The other way you will be locked in to W11 straight away and lose your perfect OS.
Not the best idea imho.

$40 ;)

P.S. Another thing the majority are totally unaware of you can install W11 offline with a command which lets you do lots of changes to the OS and lock them in beforehand.

===========
Other option is to buy W11 Pro retail online for next to nothing
Don't be confused Biill is giving away W11 so don't feel bad paying only $15-20AU for it.
All these places selling it for full retail are nothing but rip offs.
Then you never have to choose.

Buy all my keys there never had a issue and I register all my Os with Microsoft.

WARNING PROVISO !
This key can be used again if OS is reinstalled/formatted only if you link it to your Microsoft account (we can send instructions).

Which means all you need do is after the FIRST INSTALL go to Microsoft account and register it.
You can register as many OS for the same PC as you like.

Just to add only hiccup I see.
I don't know how / what you need to do to activate Photoshop and similar on 2 HDD.

edit : ahh not a problem you can use Photoshop on 2 PC ( 2 hardrive) one at a time.

Just wanted to check as I have some registered software like Malwarebytes won't let you do that.

Hi @philrob .

I use w11 with all the programs that I imagine you also use without problems.

Having w10 you can upgrade for free and legally to w11 even if your pc does not meet some of the conditions that Microsoft considers necessary (I just upgraded a laptop bought 8 years ago).

If you need more information please contact me on my Discord channel.

If you are going to upgrade from w10 you must first check the order of the boot, recovery, system, etc. partitions.
The success of the upgrade depends on it.

If you install w11 from scratch you should have no problems.

I am sure there must be a clear and full guide somewhere from some IT guy, maybe on youtube, with clear instructions on how to do this the best way, for example in line with 8Ball's methode. I am interested as wel, but in no way an expert, so if someone has a link ...

:) problem is my way is not a do one time and you're done

Just a idea to make and maintain this plus a lot of other things not mentioned.

1. Copy anytime - This is a folder can be dropped into C:\ fresh partition it does so much I could not begin to say from Program Data to userdata and all in between untold settings for standalone apps so they work like you never just did a fresh OS. Every sort of file from every folder that has been examined from a fresh setup 1 change at a time ! ( in W7 days )
2. Standalone apps - 95% of all my apps are standalone and reside with everything else to setup windows on an external SSD
3. Streamlined drivers - Slipstream has been around for decades.
I don't add driver to the OS setup. I leave that stock media tool 23H2.
I extract 90% of drivers, obviously some you don't want to or can't like AMD or Nvidia
I point the folder to "add drivers" bang done 14 drivers/ device combos
Registry and imports:
4.I import a advanced firewall setup 35 changes
5.I import Winaero Tweaker 40 changes
6. I import explorer patcher 20 changes
7. I import a basic registry 30 changes that oversee 100 actual OS changes
8. I import Open Shell 20 changes

So 4. to 8. take a few clicks and change 100's of things !

Then I have more registry and edits to cmd and reg I have to copy and paste
Then when everything is absolutely installed I have.
COPY ONCE ALL APPS INSTALLED - Another folder that totally transforms my desktop icons and entire startmenu. There is absolutely nothing Windows left only calculator and OSD keyboard in my taskbar.

My point is unless you do dozens ( more like 100's ) of OS installs you will never tweak this kind of setup to the level I do.
This is coming from some who brought True Image and used it and recommended it.
NO MORE best way is fresh OS but make it as painless and as fast as possible.
A image does not allow you this sort of customization so any changes made to last image update is what you get so forget to update your image and your most recent AC folder in docs as a example will be old.

For each person all that means totally different thing to the next.
Even now I think of new things I can do different or add to make it even better.

;)

I think for mine, most important thing is I have absolute faith I can delete the primary partitions and be back to my absolute 100% best state in 2 hours............ if I put my head down that includes full rig setup ready to run.
