SOLVED [Windows 10/nVidia] rFactor 2 won't start

    Can you make a screenshot of your Task Manager in order to see what programs are running in the background and post it ?
    Your hardware is more than ok but there can be a program running in the background that is stopping rFactor 2 from starting.
    There are some really smart people visiting this forum (not me !) and I am pretty sure we can find a solution.
    Believe me, once you drive rFactor 2, you will know it has been worth it !

    Posting in the support forum is done via the launcher, not directly in the forum. Ultimately I don't know you'd get any more eyeballs creating a thread there than you will/have here.

    Yeah, I realise it probably does, but I get a different driver version reported each time I go into the config as well, at least until it decides to settle on 0.00000.00..... . But my rF2 starts. So yeah, I wouldn't consider it a symptom in itself.

    In the moment of starting, following processes are running:

    I missed that, proabably somewhere during the registration process.

    Your Task Manager looks ok to me, it was worth a try.
    I remember an incidence quite some time ago when the video card was not installed in the first PCI-X 16 slot but in a second PCI-X 4X slot and this was creating a similiar problem (the user only had one vdeo card).
    But to be honest, I am as stumped as you are.
    rFactor 2 has always been sensitive to video drivers/settings etc.
    Last try, how recent is your BIOS update, as I said earlier, I am scratching for ideas here.
    Bernd probably has the best idea in contacting S397 directly by mail and seeing what they can do to help.
    They also have a Discord channel which will probably speed things up a bit.
    Good luck, most of us here found out quite quickly that rFactor 2 is not Plug-n-Play like other games but we are still here today probably because once we finally got it up and running, we got hooked on the superior driving model.
    P.S. ADSTA also had a good idea, run rF2 in Administrator mode, then do the video configuration and try starting the game.

    Just so you know, as Lazza said the support forum is accessed via the Launcher, #1 in the picture. EDIT: The first thread I read after posting this was your post in the support forum. :rolleyes:
    #2 in the picture, (for a test out of curiosity) have you tried launching Dev Mode?

    It wouldn't hurt to go to the Support folder (\Steam\steamapps\common\rFactor 2\Support)
    Open the Runtimes folder and run, one at a time, each of the 4 vcredist exe files.
    Also run the DXSETUP exe in the DirectX folder.

    Yes, dev mode has exactly the same behaviour. Interesstingly one of the 4 runtimes wasn't installed, however installing didn't help :-(

    I have no overclocking software and also tried staring with deactived virus scanner. No success either.

    I've been trying to get rFactor 2 running for one week and failed.

    I didn't receive a reply in the other support thread, also advice from discord channel lead nowhere. Therefore I'm giving up. I've uninstalled the game and refunded it through stream.

    You guys have been great, maybe we race against each other in another racing sim!

    Why is this marked solved? I don't see a resolution here.

    I just installed rF2 from scratch through Steam and have not yet been able to launch the game.

    I'm having what appears to be the exact same problem and I think I've tried everything mentioned here. Any new ideas? Also Win10 and Nvidia (1060). One thing I may have slightly different than most is my install is not on the C drive (as you can see in trace). I've tried running steam as admin. I used DDU then installed the latest Nvidia drivers (441.08).

    I'm not at home but I decided to mess with it over Remote Desktop and discovered that I can get past the splash screen in Remote Desktop. Not going to be able to play the game that way, of course, but it could be a useful data point. I was able to disable TrackIR through the menu.

    Here is my trace after disabling TrackIR, but still using Remote Desktop. Everything so far indicates the problem is video/graphics related. If disabling TrackIR doesn't work outside Remote Desktop (can't try till I get home), what's the next thing to do or try?

    Good to see some progress and at least this time it shut down normally, the same as my trace file shows.
    But that line above is the last line before the shutdown started.
    Seeing as it refers to the player.JSON, which can get corrupted, I would delete that player.JSON and a new one will be generated when you start rF2 the next time.

    At this point I'd say that the game can launch and seems okay but only with Remote Desktop (hence pointing to a video/graphics problem). I have not tried to start an actual race that way but the fact I get further with RD means it's not happy with something about the GPU, I assume.

    I'm hoping it isn't GPU related for your sake as you got past the VidMan Enter this time but looks like the player.JSON was maybe to blame.
    The only thing graphics wise I saw that might have alarmed you was the Video error loads but that's probably old lurking rF1 code back when there were intro vids.
    There is very little difference between our trace files, at least the bit you have that I could compare. ;)

    But I only get past VidMan::Enter when I'm using Remote Desktop, which probably uses a completely different renderer and not really the GPU.

    I have next to no experience with using a computer that isn't in front of me.
    I assumed whatever pc the game is installed on would be doing all the work. :confused:

    Update: I have determined it is somehow related to my Yamaha receiver. I can't tell you much more than that but when I bypass the receiver and plug HDMI directly into my Sony TV, it allows me to launch the game.
