TDF File Material Names

Forgive me if these are duplicate questions, I've searched but couldn't find answers.

1) Is there is a limit to the character length for material names, both in general and specifically for the TDF file? The Developer's Guide indicates that materials in the TDF file should be limited to 8 characters. However the TDF for the Loch Drummond sample track has names that are longer. My tracks have some materials with 15+ characters in their name and everything *seems* to work fine.

2) Is there a problem with using underscores in the materials names? I understand that designated suffixes such as _WET have a specific functions. But I've used names like "CAR001_RED" and again it *seems* to work fine, but I'm wondering if there's any possibility of it causing a problem.

Thanks in advance,

1) I'm not aware of any File Name Length Limitations for Material or TDF Values, but i would always recommend to use short Names.
Is it really necessary to use 15 and more Chracters?

If i remember it right, there have been Problems in the Past with too long File Names, that did have more than 15 Characters.
But i don't know if it's still the Case.

2) I e.g. experienced Problems with the Terms "_black" and "_external" in the Material- and also the Terms "_black_glass", "_headlights" and "_rearlights" in the gmt Filename (Look here), but i don't know, if an official List with "critical in Use" Terms exists.

I didn't test deeper, if using an Underline makes a Difference and also if e.g. it's only the Term "black" in the Name "_black_glass", that causes Problems.

But i think in most Cases, you will be aware quickly if something is going wrong. :)

Hi,

I think the limit was 32 characters. if it was longer, it just crashed to desktop on exiting the track. Can't remember if it was a FAT32 legacy thing thing.
