Stop VSYNC to avoid latency OK, but how to have a smooth game ?

    I'm going to chime in on this, since SPASKIS and ARI have already weighted on this.. Both of these people have solved and have involved themselves with my issues (Stuttering and SLI issues) listen to
    what they to have to say '

    Hello.

    I go back to this topic that I created a year ago, not to create a new similar one.

    New hardware: gtx 1080, i7 4770k, 16GB DDR3, SSD, TV 8ms 60 hz 1080p.

    I have not used the vsync for several months, but I am not satisfied with the result.

    I block the FPS but I always feel to run out of fluidity.

    That's what I tested yesterday using riva tuner :
    ---> lock at 54 (53 + 1), 59, 60 (59+1), 62 (61 + 1), 68 (67 + 1), 74 (73 + 1), 84 (83 + 1), but also 59.998 and 59.999.

    My FPS are not very high because I play 100% at ultra graphics, and are generally between minimum 43 and ~90 FPS, I think this is an important element to take into account.

    I tested the nvidia "fast sync" without success : I think I do not have enough FPS for that.
    I want to keep all my graphics in ultra because anyway I am the vast majority of the time above 55 FPS, which should be suitable for me if I find the right value to enter riva tuner.

    I would appreciate your advice :)
    And it could serve a lot of people.

    It's been said before... as long as you're using cockpit view while playing, Ultra post-processing is a waste of fps because the cockpit cam only renders as Medium. Save Ultra for screenshots and replays.

    I'm pretty sure it's not placebo between medium and high: I see in cockpit view a real difference in quality. I play a lot of night or early in the morning, it allows me to see these subtleties.

    Do you remember which thread contains this information ?

    Thank's

    None = No PP effects
    Low = Glare Effects
    Medium = Glare Effects and Depth of Field
    High = All Effects at High Quality
    Ultra = All Effects at Ultra Quality

    Description from when these effects were first released. DoF isn't even available in cockpit no matter what setting, so I wouldn't see much benefit in running ultra.

    Sigh.

    https://www.studio-397.com/2017/05/open-beta-with-directx-11-and-virtual-reality-support/

    "An overview of the levels:
    None
    Low = Glare Effects
    Medium = Glare Effects and Depth of Field
    High = All Effects at High Quality
    Ultra = All Effects at Ultra Quality

    "Realistic simulation of Depth Of Field, Lens Flare, Bloom and other Optical aberrations, with scalable options."
    ***
    You will not see Depth of Field, Lens Flare, Bloom or Optical aberrations in cockpit view because they are lens effects that the human eye does not generate. You will see Glare Effects in cockpit view, which I think utilizes bloom in a strict fashion.

    Thus why go above Medium post processing when you're driving? You shouldn't if you're at all concerned about fps.

    If DoF is not visible in cockpit, doesn't that mean there's no reason going above Low then?

    It's likely and that's what I use (because I need the fps), but some people like having DoF in replays.

    It's interesting that some visual settings impact framerate even though they are producing no visible effects (like DoF in cockpit, or rain drops in dry conditions). I honestly feel like there are quite a few settings in rF2 that are not worth running at Ultra. I wish there was a guide of some sort comparing all settings at all levels, and their impact, but I guess I am not the only one wishing that :)

    S397 already shared recommended graphical settings. I don't think developers have time for detailed comparison guide, that's for the community to do (you ever saw game studio releasing detailed tweak guide for their own graphical settings?). I won't come up with a detailed guide with screenshots, no time for it, but I'll share what I find in random posts.

    I strongly advise you to try the following.

    This is to activate the vsync for perfect fluidity, while cap the FPS at ~0.01 FPS below the exact refresh rate of your monitor.
    For example I cap FPS from 59.999 to 59.989.

    Tested and approved.

    Post from RealNC :
    https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/the-truth-about-pre-rendering-0.365860/page-12#post-5380262

    EDIT :
    Almost the same latency than vsync off and gsync, for example :

    vsync ON uncapped: 98ms
    vsync ON capped: 48ms
    (50ms reduction, which is 3 frames less latency; 16.7 * 3)
    vsync OFF capped: 34ms
    gsync capped: 39ms
