Rfactor2 The VR thread -settings & tips

I use OTT too and if I don't start Oculus home, the super sampling that I put in OTT don't charge, I don't understand but this happens to me.
Interesting I'd heard asw didnt work if you dont have home open as well but can confirm it switches on as needed (thankfully not as often)

It definitely seems to be doing it's thing, I tried cranking up to 1.8 and it was a bit too much for the GPU.

Was it an earlier version you tested on?

I use the last OTT version.
If I charge Oculus home after OTT running all works fine, asw, ss,...
One morething, I have 1080 ti and with rFactor i can not play more than 1.5 ss.

Weird, I'm trying to think what else I have done. I have it set to auto start with windows as a scheduled task (option inside OTT)

I'm on a 1070 and prior to this I had to have just about everything on low and no SS, just AA X2. (Which I still run now)

I've also overclocked the gpu but it was only about a 5% increase.

I now have

Track med
Opponent med (texture set to high in player file)
Player low (high in plr)
Texture med
X4
Low special effects
Shadows off.

Well, I have it a little different, for my preferences.
SS - 5
ASW - NO
AA X1
Post effects - No
Textures high and X8
Circuit low - I like only the important of a circuit
Player and oponent - full
Special effects - high
Shadows - low
The rest options to No
9 AI
Allways at 90fps

For me this is the maximum without any problems.

Adrian hits the nail on the head...running on and off online in a series and mid-ohio was difficult to run smoothly in VR but this week barber is as smooth as butter...

I might try that later to see if it helps on my system a bit.

Ok to quote myself I set the OculusClient.exe to "Run As Administrator" and this stopped it auto loading at Windows Startup which is handy. I loaded the usual stuff (steam, crew chief, RF2) and ran the game, I was still able to change the ASW by CTRL+NUMPAD keys as desired which is also still handy.

RAM usage below, the dotted yellow line & numbers are from the OculusClient.exe not running, you can then see the jump up in both RAM & Page file thereafter when I loaded it!
I can't say whether there was a significant performance benefit in game, if there is it's marginal and barely noticeable but I'll be keeping it like this as the aforementioned windows start up was a pain and the extra headroom of RAM could be handy one day I guess :)

Interesting, so not a massive impact.

What about using OTT ss instead of steam and unticking the box below SS in steam?

I was referring to official content
3rd party mods are all over the place FPS wise,
If there were some kind of benchmark standard for modders to work to then that would help solve it,
Like an FPS count for one lap with a certain Test car in a set time/conditions & res/graphics all in “Test benchmark” setting
FPS count would have to be in the range of official or even a set benchmark sequence so modders could compare like for like On their particular system

No fps drops with new GT3s from the Studio ?

Personaly unplayable for me i just cant drive them -_-

Compared to other Mods yes they are performance heavier but I can run with 19AI just about alright (from the usual 29AI with other mods).

VR with my i5 6600k and 16GB and 1080Ti has really bad performance, black frames like if I was to blink really slowly, and really long pauses like massive stutters that can last 5 or so seconds.
Not sure what else to do, I've dropped to Low settings, no AA or PP. Framer ate is 90 with about 50%load on both CPU and GPU.
I've tried OC both and default both CPU/GPU.
rFactor 2 looks really clear and I really wish I could get it running like I have AC/R3E and pC2 because they all run well with 90 fps with good settings.

If you are on Win10, you could try turning off Game Mode, I personally had problems with it + VR. But I doubt you'd get 90FPS without going low on shadows.

One more suggestion, which is increasingly important in VR, try to limit amount of apps running in the background. Every app, tweaker, monitor, HUD, tool takes CPU and with VR experience requiring many processes to participate it is even more important to have less stuff running. Those apps won't make difference in 45 vs 90, but may affect overall smoothness.

I reinstalled SteamVR and turned to HMD only instead of HMD+monitor and its get rid of the flashes and freezes but it got to 1:30am and I needed sleep.
So far it was a lot better, fingers crossed.

Side question/offtopic: what settings you use in R3E to get 90FPS? R3E runs worse than rF2 in VR no matter what I do, so curious what am I missing?

Glad it works better :)

this is a pretty lame answer from marcel on discord concerning VR users and the need for lock to horizon;

the only "workaround" I know is drive slower cars or soften your suspension

That's what a workaround is, you workaround the problem/issue and he provided one. FYI he also said in the RD Live stream a while ago that they are working on Lock To Horizon, but until then workarounds will be the only way.
