    That's WiFi. That's why it's not recommended.

    Yeah, I do plug in if it's an important league race, but just casual stuff I'll play on Wi-Fi. And actually 80% of the time it's fine (if the kids aren't watching Netflix) but disconnections always happen when you don't need them to!
    I just wondered if there was a rule of thumb you can follow for network connections, say settings for slow, medium, and fast Internet? And a setting for WiFi.

    Probably no more than half what your connection is capable of (connection speed, not theoretical maximum of the tech) to leave some room. Most modern connections that should be plenty to race, even if distant cars might be pretty bad in replays if you have a slow connection.

    It's the consistency and reliability that counts most, and why many leagues ban Wifi. Even for casual it's best to go hardwired, save yourself the annoyance.
