It's great once you try it isn't it With regards to the AMD the cards are designed to run at the high temps for years, the power difference will barely make a diference to your bill and the custom cards coming soon will not only be much quiter but will dissipate heat much better On the other hand Nvidia seems to run better on RFactor 2 than AMD
I'm thinking watercooling the 290 was a option + the 120mm fan on the side of the lianli case but i think i should wait some days and look what will be released next from oem partners and than we will see if i go again with AMD or NV.
For anyone concerned about an AMD R9 290 (non X). It runs just fine. Metro Last Light is an NVidia title (TWIMTBP), and the R9 290, is not only is it whooping the pants off of a GTX 770, it's beating the 780 AND Titan. In fact, that entire review, has the R9 290 beating the GTX 770 in every test they had (in games). Some by 3-6fps (lower res) but in higher res, by upto 20! Here just read the entire review. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7481/the-amd-radeon-r9-290-review To me, the R9 290 (non X) is the sweet spot @ $400. When the drivers mature, and non reference boards come out, it's only gonna get better.
the 290 have 3 thinks: - It goes to 94ºC quickly and then stay there, managing something to dont elevate even more the temps, so it means a performance reduction. - It eats tons of Watts, like dual-gpus, but with just one. - Is louder, much louder than gtx780 and gtx770. So, power temps and noise is the big problem of that 290, but yes, seems that it is a great gpu, I think it can do a bit better than a 770 everywhere, but that +80W, +13ºC and +10dB, is not worth it. I have to see an overclocked GTX770 to that limits, Im sure it can beat that 290.
For me, the biggest question is how it handles rF 2. I don't care as much about other games as for rFactor 2. R290(X) is a new architecture so maybe it will be more "compatibile" with rF 2 than older AMD cards are.
If we don't hear anything, I guess he's not removed his face from his palm yet. Think its time to setup an nVidia vs AMD Topic.
nice. and speed1, whats your cpu and speed so we can factor in if they're too dissimilar. You guys should share identical graphics settings and perform a 1 lap fraps benchmark from a replay (you will both need the same replay). I've just made a quick replay with 16 Meganes at Sebring with you in the rear (sebring is one of the tracks that hits the performance most) and it will be yield good comparisons. Sebring Replay: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_JO7uvTTnd1LTNsZ2ZrM29jU2c/edit?usp=sharing You should also use the same view/perspective for the recording (e.g. in-cockpit with the same fov and with all mirrors and virtual mirrors enabled to maximise load). Run the fraps benchmark tool and start it the moment you first cross the finish line (so not immediately when the race starts) and stop it when you cross the finish line again completing a benchmark for the first and only lap (this will be more than enough).
For the first i plug it stock in the already existing pc. I have two running with phenoms, the one where i plug it in is the watercooled 4x4000mhz / 1666ddr3 16gb / 890FX. Could also need some upgrade but for now it should do it. Lets see if i will keep the card. If so it needs a watercooler as well, that comes than first.
I cant do the same test than him, basically because I have 3x 1280x1024 monitors (3840x1024) and probably he will have some 16:9 monitor/s.
Yes 3 x fullhd but the whole pc config is not really a benchmark sys as it is somewhat dated but i'll still let you know the performance.
Metro Last Light, is optimised for nV, so it should work just fine. Oh, and new drivers came out today.
