Hi , I just tried to build my new pc but it wont power up . I'm sure I wired it up correctly but I'm a little confused with the on/off power connecters . Can anyone tell me which is neg/pos , the wires are both black . I notice a small arrow/triangle on one side is this neg or pos ?

Also the board has a 8 pin 12v power supply and my PSU only has a 4 pin , it says in the manual that this is fine and to use the first 4 pins , could this be the problem ?

    System specs are :

    CPU i5 4670 Haswell .

    MB Asrock Fatal1ty Z97X Killer .

    GPU GTX660 OC

    RAM Kingstone Hyper X @ 1866 .

    PSU 700W Infinity .

    HD Kingstone SSDNOW 300V .

Please , I hope some one can help . I checked the PSU is still ok in my other pc , is there something I've missed ?

EDIT : I'm a noob at this , which I realise now with the stupid NZXT case I got .

Hi PMC I presume the reason is the 12V 8 pin connector. I will try to find the handbook in the Internet and take a look into.
Have you a second free 12 V with 4pin on your power supply which fit ?
Edit: Have you used the pin 1 - 5 on the 8 pin 12V connector

A short research result: It should eprk also with the 4pin but only if the power consumption is not to high.
Have you any acoustc signal on power on or is there no reaction ?

Sounds to me like that won't work and you don't have power.

Edit: Just noticed you have a 700W power supply, you should be good.

Hmm the light comes on the GPU , this is the only sign of life , I do believe there was a beep initially but I reversed the on/of wires and don't think there is anything now

You can put two 4 pins from the PSU on the 8 pin to power it up.

Not sure but beep codes (more then one) indicate a problem.

Try to reduce the pc to a minimum of components. Change this anything?

O.K...I'll stop bugging you here but if all 8 pins aren't plugged in on your MB you won't have power. :)

If you give me a minute or 3 , I have to swap the 700w PSU out of the pc I'm using (I needed to test it was ok ) and put the other back in here . What do you concider minimum , no HD and disc drive ?

EDIT: The manual say's using the first 4 pins is ok ,but maybe not

They should all be plugged in, I've never seen a motherboard NOT need all the pins. :)

ask a mate in my company. He means all pins must be connected he was not 100% sure bit I think also it should be so. There are adapter available to get this 8 pin on your existing power supply.
You can cut one of your old supply but the better choice is looking for an adapter.

OK still no action with no components . I will try to get an adaptor for it tomorrow ,its a bit late here ,damn time zone's . I'm still a bit concerned about the neg/pos on the power switch wires still , if someone could help with that so I can be sure . Geez I hope I haven't fried something .

EDIT: If you think splining the other 4 on to the other 4 pin will work I might try it if I cant find an adapter

Both black wires doesn't matter actually, one is an "in" and the other is the "out". I highly doubt you fried the board, it's actually quite hard to do. If it was easy I would have fried one by now. :p

    Don't mean any offence.

The power Supply is the weak link, even if it had 8 pin power it is generic crapper.

    They quote 700watts and 2 x 20amp on 12volt rails ............ pigs fly too. ;)

GTX660 OC you want a good single 12v rail, 500-600 Watts ( depending if you overclocking ) and 80Plus rating imho.

All your other components are another class and deserve a decent power supply.
