Not connected to Steam.

I am currently using rFactor 2 version 1133.

All the necessary ports are open (I tried both suggested ports - no difference) and the firewalls are properly set up as well.

I've started up the SteamCMD program.

All the shortcuts are in place.

I then run the rFactor 2 dedicated server program located in the bin64 map -> from the shortcut , and get this message: Not connected to Steam. It is set to LAN as in intend to test a self made mod. -> the server does not show up on @redapg's site either.

So, how do you connect a dedicated server to Steam? The online guides don't offer a solution so I am not looking for a link to any of those.

I'm not sure if i understand what you want to do.
You only want to test a Mod on a Server over LAN, is it that?
Then join with a Shortcut to the rFactor2.exe, where you use the local IP, that the Link in the Target Field of the Shortcut looks like this:

"G:\Steam\steamapps\common\rFactor 2\Bin64\rFactor2.exe" +multiplayer +connect="127.0.0.1:64297"

Adapt that to your Path and Port and you can directly join, by using the Shortcut.

I am trying to host a multiplayer server on my own laptop with myself as administrator and with some AI cars. I am doing this over LAN.

I'll try to be precise:

-I am using rFactor version 1133.
-I am using the dedicated server program.
-I have made the shortcuts with, I think, all the correct pathways.
-I am running all the programs as administrator.
-I am using windows 10.
-I have tried using the suggested ports.
-I am running the SteamCMD program before starting the server - I am not sure if this is necessary.
-I have made a working RFMOD, which is installed - it contains a track and car.

I launch the dedicated server program from the shortcut, I click through all the setup screens. The server is loaded and running inside the dedicated server program. The final screen briefly shows a "Not broadcoasting", (broadcasting is on "true" in my multiplayer.json) and then "Not connected to Steam."

I am launching the game before the dedicated server program, because the game doesn't load when I do those steps in reverse.

I cannot see my server in the multiplayer tab inside the game, and I cannot see it on https://simracepackages.lima-city.de/rF2server/ either.

That is basically it. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, as I have followed a couple of guides.

Is the server and game on the same machine? Ifso in the server's player.json file look for the line with "WebUI Port=5397" and change the port number to say 5398. As Marcel said you don't need to run steamcmd before starting the server.
Start order when server and game are on same machine;
1. Close steam.
2. Start server.
3. Start steam.
4. Start game.

The game doesn't load beyond the initial screen when I follow that order. It hangs on this screen:

I changed the port to 5398.

"G:\Steam\steamapps\common\rFactor 2\Bin64\rFactor2.exe" +multiplayer +connect="127.0.0.1:64297"

I did this. No luck. I assume that I cannot join my own server when it is not on your list, @redapg? Because that likely means that my server is not "online." Even though the dedicated server program is running.

@SharD I just tried it out on my Machine and it works as it should, so there must be something being wrong on your Side.
Do your Steam Command dedicated Server and your Game Installation have the same Version?
If you use DLC Content, did you copy the ServerUnlock.bin and Unlock.bin from the UserData Folder of your Game and pasted it into the UserData Folder of the dedicated Server? (normally only the ServerUnlock.bin should be enough, if i remember it right)

In your Shortcut to join the Game, did you adapt the Path to the rFactor.exe (bold) to your Path?
And is the Port that you use 64297, if not, change that to your Port too.
"G:\Steam\steamapps\common\rFactor 2\Bin64\rFactor2.exe" +multiplayer +connect="127.0.0.1:64297"

When everything is set up properly, it has to work.

And the Procedure has to be:
- ensure that your rfmod and the Content that it uses, is installed in the dedicated Server and in your Game Installation
- ensure that Steam is completely shut down
- start the Steam Command dedicated Server and wait until it completely started
- click on your Shortcut to the rFactor2.exe

The Steam Client should start now and go directly to the Multiplayer Car Selection.

That your dedicated Server shows, that it is not connected to Steam, should not matter, if you want to use it on LAN.
At least in my Opinion, but we talk about rFactor 2 here. :)

And that it also doesn't show up on my Server List Website, doesn't matters too, because you want to use it on LAN.

If you want, i can record a Video that shows how it works here.

Can I bring this thread back to life?
I have been running a dedi server for a couple of years and just updated to a new PC with win 11. Ran through all the usual steps but when I run the dedi server program the dialogue says not connected to steam. See image attached.
I have unblocked through the firewall and antivirus. Can't seem to make it work
Have run the runtimes all 4.
Any suggestions?

I ran into this issue as well after building a new host. I tried all of the usual steps, but I just could not get it to work.

My solution was this:
1. Create a new Steam account.
2. Install the full Steam client on my server and log into it with the new account.
3. Set Steam to start in the background with Windows.
4. Buy another copy of RF2 with the new account (you can get it super cheap if you wait for a sale).
5. Finally, start your dedi servers and they should all work (assuming your firewall is set correctly).
* You do not need to open RF2 in Steam. The first dedi server you load will automatically start RF2.

Obviously, I shouldn't need the Steam client and a second copy of RF2 in order to run dedi servers, but I wasted so much time troubleshooting the "not connected to Steam" error and this made more sense than wasting more time on the problem.
