Hi guys, I want to update my system. basically just my cpu, MB and ram as I have all other parts. I currently run a i7 920 @ 4.0 with 12 gigs. I built the system late 2009 and its getting long in the tooth. Ive been out of the game for a while and I am not sure on what CPU to get intel or AMD? I want to keep my budget to under 800 usd. I am eyeing AMD FX series and intels i5 and i7s. I will be strictly sim racing with these components, if that makes any difference. I have no idea what cpu to go with, I am not afraid to OC that's why (I think) an i5 seems the way to go with some fast ram.

I have a gtx780 EVGA classified and will be keeping that for now. My specs can be found on my profile page

    Any suggestions? Thanks

Intel i7 quad core, maybe 4970K, Asus MB Z97, maybe Sabertooth or Maximus Hero and some Corsair RAM 8/16 GB Vengeance or Dominator. That should be under 800 bucks..

Depends what resolution you do not say.

ie: single screen 1920x1080 i5 / Z97 / 8GB Ram is all you need for any video card.

    I5-4690 (non-k) with an an H97 motherboard with G.Skill 8GB (2x4GB) dual channel memory @ 1600 MHz @ CL 7

Or get the K version of that CPU w/ a Z97 motherboard to if you wish to overclock. If you go this route then get G.Skill 8GB (2x4GB) dual channel memory @ 2133 MHz @ CL 9.

If you're using triples and multiview then I would sell the 780 and look for a 780 Ti or 980. Every bit counts at that res. I see 780 Tis selling for $475-ish brand new now, let alone used.

Thanks for the tips guys! Yes, I will be running 3 screens. My goal is to have 120fps but I know that wont happen in rf2 but I can probably get there in other titles. I do perfer Multiview and HDR but as of now I run with both of those set to off to get better FPS.

I do plan to OC but if I get an i7 @ a stock speed of 4ghz I may just leave it.

I have a question about my ssd boot drive and HDs in my current system, when I get my parts and build my system, what will happen when I take my ssd and plug it in? Will it boot to windows or should I wipe the drive clean first? This also pertains to my 2 HDs as well, can I just leave the data on those drives or will things get corrupted?

I believe the 4690 non-k does 3.8 or 3.9 GHz without overclocking. If looking for 120 fps on triples, then I would definitely sell the 780 and get a 780 Ti or 980.

Here is a good case for your pick Paul..........

    https://pcpartpicker.com/forums/topic/1844-pcie-30-amd-fx-8350-intel-3770k

    BUT ................

Notice how he goes on and on and on about PCIe3.0 as some overiding factor

Pcie3.0 can be a major factor with rF2.

    Turbo speeds

    4690 - 3.9GHz
    4690K -3.9GHz
    4790 - 4.0GHz
    4790K -4.4GHz

Is the extra 400MHz " good" bang for buck or worth the extra money for budget conscious ?

    No way in the world.

Ok I think I will go with than DD ;) i7 4790k it is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117369

    with this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132132
I wanted as many ports as I can get being that I have alot of things plugged in and this board gives me 8 total with 4 being 2.0 ports, plus the front panel.

Not sure about the ram though?

Im not sold on the MB yet, I am impartial I just want usb ports and a solid MB that can handle the heat generated by the 4.0ghz

Are you aware, about this limitation:

    PCI Express 3.0 x16 2 (Single at x16, Dual at x8/x8)?

If you want to change your system one day to SLI, you stick on 2 x8 channels...

    Nothing wrong with Asus ;)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130769

    $149 after rebate

SLi is a pertinent point too like J points out, I rather thought you would upgrade to GTX980

Like why buy another GTX780 why not 2 GTX780Ti or GTX9xx

Will you even find another EVGA same version ?

At OCUK ther are 2 x 780 no EVGA

At newegg there are 4 x 780 no EVGA

My store there is NO 780's

You actually have same limitation with all CPUs you pick anyway.

You need X97 Motherboard as well as the right Processor for 40 lanes.

    Spin explains it better p

You want full, true dual PCI-E 3.0 @ 16x? You have the following options

    Socket: LGA 2011
    Chipset: X79
    CPU ("i7" line): 4930k, 4960x

    Socket: LGA 2011-3
    Chipset: X99
    CPU ("i7" line): 5930k, 5960x

The x models are almost double the cost but only offer a 2-5% performance improvement except in programs that can take advantage of the 2/4 extra cores/threads of the 5960x (8/16 cores/threads instead of 6/12), those programs will obviously show quite a good improvement.

By the way, if you're on a budget, I would get the the 4690 not 4790, you can probably save $120 while only loosing 4 hyperthreaded threads.

Then sell the 780 and get a 780 Ti or 980. Seriously, GPU is by far the most important factor, even more so with triple screens and >60 frames-per-second.

Ok how about this , do you think my current system will bottle neck a 980?

*EDIT what I have found is it will not bottle neck the card...**** I might just buy a 980 and upgrade my CPU cooler to that water one and call it a day....... that might be more of an upgrade than new MB, Ram and CPU? but it costs the same regardless.

*EDIT2 At the resolution I am running it seems that my current system will bottleneck a 980.....this computer **** is very confusing...

Well Spinelli, it comes down to the longevity of the system, I built my current system in 2009 and it has worked great. I have only updated GPU's put a better ssd in and upgraded the psu. I built the system not knowing a damn thing about computers and I think I did a good job. So, I want to do the same, (but now I know what I want out of the system in that, high res sim racing with high frames and eye candy turned up) I want a cpu and board that can grow for another 5 to 6 years, and for that to happen I think I will have to increase my budget a bit, 59x0k, ddr4 ram, gtx980 and a x99 MB with sli support. That will cost me but it should last for quite some time. What do you think?
