Yeh it`s more or less that rig Empty. I`ve changed parts since then, different card, RAM and a couple of other bits...

I`ve learned a lot since those days though, man that thread was an epic!!!

Total building noob and as nervous as a kitten lol...

I`d say it was fun stuff too man but I`m not sure D would... :D

I agree but there is more than 3ds max at rendering.
If Terence keeps at 3ds, maybe i5 is enough.

BUT my back mind goes: are u sure CPU doesnt pay off later?

you are right nikos, for some specific applications the virtualised cores can come in handy of course, I only mention it related to 3ds max in particular.

Unless you have a specific software use for the virtualised cores, it will be a complete waste of money, and £70 budget could go elsewhere in the system and provide a much better benefit overall.

Cuda compatibility is crucial here really, a lot of programs have it and the performance on the gpu is way superior to any cpu(at least in the case where your using a 780 lol). I render vray shadow maps on my gpu in max and a 4k map takes around 15/20 mins to render, my i5-2500k at 4.7ghz took an hour, sadly I don't have data for the i7 equivalent but I know from previous experiences that it's basically the same as the i5 in max.

As tjc is off to college and at the start of his journey, it's highly unlikely anything he is going to do will need an i7, but then it's not about what we need, it's about what we want lol.

Unless it can be pointed out that what we want is completely achievable with what we need.

Nah I agree both the 4770K and SSD would be ideal for tj but I don't want to stress him anymore.

Any way empty what you think of some of the parts

The A31 I built a couple of these really liked them, the H100 fits nice.
I like the removeable drive bay blow more air over the GTX780 ( not that a windforce needs it )
Wiring and rubber grommets are good.

    REVIEW
    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/Z87-G45_GAMING/

I think this is a great board for the dollars, have built one also.
It lacks a few features of the GD65 but nothing tj will ever want to use.
I not planning on telling tj to OC yet but 4-4.2GHz would be a nice place to end up
He wont be using Raid so the controller does not hurt things either.

    Gigabyte 780
    Windforce is great for mine.
I did specc the GHz edition but that left no money for DVD and K/B mouse set he needs
I probably rather the OC edition if i had a extra 20 quid.

tj i think has picked wrong ram too.
I specced the 1600mhz Corsair with tighter timings and 1.5v

    PSU EVGA

There was really nothing else to pick at OCUK I would have found a TT toughpower gold to match the case
It is 4 rails but I don't see that being a drama with single card.

Soooo... revised build with possibilities/options... :)

    Card:

Gigabyte Geforce GTX 780 Windforce 3x OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card - £384.98

Only scanned briefly but this is the lowest price I`ve found so far for the OC edititon... what`s REV2.0" btw?

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Comp...rce=googleps&gclid=CJG_ut649r0CFWT4wgod8ncAhA

    CPU:

    Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail - £233.99

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-471-IN

    RAM:

    Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 16GB DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit - £139.99

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Comp...ory+Kit+(CMY16GX3M2A1600C9R)+?productId=55961

    Motherboard:

    MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Series Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX - £106.99

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-235-MS

    PSU:

EVGA SuperNova NEX 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply - £76.99

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-001-EA

    £12 cheaper at dabs - http://www.dabs.com/products/evga-6...0W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply&src=16

    Cooling:

Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler - £83.88

http://www.dabs.com/products/corsai... Storage - Cases, Cooling and Power - Cooling

    £80 for case.

Rounding up the numbers that comes to £1107 or £1095 if I get the PSU from dabs...

A little over my budget but do-able...

It would also mean no SSD for now though.

    If I went for the i5 - £161.99

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-470-IN&groupid=701&catid=6

That`s £72 cheaper than the i7 so it seems to me the thing I need to work out is if I go for the i5 or the i7...

If I got the i5 and got the PSU from dabs I`d be saving £84 which would take the total down to £1023.

One other thing... might sound like a daft question but is the cooler really needed?

If so could I get a cheaper one or is that not worth it?

It`s £80 odd that could be saved if it`s an "extra" that could wait for now...

It`s also a bit of a bummer that I can`t get all the parts from the one place but oh well...

I have one of these cooling my OC'd 4770K (4.2) on an MSI Z87 MPower. It works great BUT it didn't fit right OOB. You can find a bunch of complaints on Corsair's forum, none of them responded to. At least this was the case about a year ago when I did my build. Had to go to the hardware store and buy a few rubber and plastic washers so it would seat correctly on the CPU.
*For memory consider Kingston, I have Hyper Beast X (I think that was the odd name) they look good and Kingston has the best overall track record for quality memory.

Yeh, I`ll take the fact that you and others seem to have had problems with the H100i not fitting, into consideration. It`s something that was mentioned to me by Liquid too (not in this thread though)

    Cheers. :)

    Ok!

I`ll check out those coolers, all good if I can get one that does the same job but saves money. Interesting that you say the Silver Arrow is just as good/bit better than the H100i... in what way?
