track loads fine, I can edit fine, but saving hangs and max eventually runs out of memory. x64 bit win10 machine with 32gb of ram, of course its 32bit max. I lowered texture size. What other tricks can i use other than splitting up the track into sections?

If you are using the graphics mode "Nitrous", try to change to "Direct3D". I had the same problem with some (heavy) tracks and this change solved the problem.

It would be ideal to have plugins for x64 Max version , but I fear that will never happen.

With gJED it probably won't. But that also allows you to use any 3d program that can export fbx.

You can go into wireframe, so it doesn't load the textures, that's what I have to do. It makes work slow, but you won't crash every couple of minutes.
