Instead of suggesting so many alternatives, why don't we just wait one month and judge the result before asking for changes?

Asking for HDR profiles to be recovered would be going back 2 years. If I don't rememeber wrong, it wasn't a very good solution where everybody was happy. It depended too much on the circuit and was being used as a patch trying to compensate a bad modding.

Gijs has made some nice videos to properly adjust materials using GJED where you can easily reproduce any time of the day and make changes on the fly to see the result immediately. IMO that's the way to do it.

I find it healthfully and constructive to talk about this before the change is fix.
And Christopher animated us to do so. I see no negative in here. All good conversations/suggestions. Nothing wrong here...

And going "back" to HDR-profiles could be a solution for the inconsitency of (modded) tracks.
Besides that you are propably right with the GJed possibilitys.

Agreed , nothing at the cost if latency, rfactor 2 looks pretty good now with decent settings on better tracks , increased latency is a real sim killer it should be as low as totally possible even at the expense of some visuals

Rfactor2 has a real direct feeling if that changes it will reduce the overall sim like quality

I bet they know what they are doing. They are hardcore sim racers as well so we can be positive and calm. They won't do anything to spoil the quality of that direct feeling with unnecessary latency. :)

I don't think Post-processing effects are bad so long as there is an option to turn them off. For some of us, the only time they become a factor in AC is is VR; the issue is they improve the lighting but, at the cost of performance unless one has monster hardware.

When i last tested it, AC postprocessing increased latency even with locked framerate, so it is not only an performance issue.

Check my Rig (in my Profile somewhere), I have a mid-range PC and can handle PP in AC just fine, sure it does take a bit of a performance hit, but with ASW (asynchronous space warp) on I get a solid 45fps and the game looks that bit better with no latency/slowdowns/stutters whatsoever. So what I'm getting at is yes you need a monster PC to keep it at 90fps with PP on, but it is easily doable on a much lesser mid range PC :)

Agreed but, I'm on Win7 so no ASW working here; I just have to limit number of AI to 12-15 max.

HDR is a form of post-processing, they just call it "post-processing effects" in AC and "HDR" in rF2. Both will add latency and you can't turn HDR off in rF2. Bringing in different HDR profiles/filters produces no extra delay, as it's still performing the same calculations and the delay is already present.

Hdr profiles like in ac to me sounds like a good idea. People have different monitors and very few of them are calibrated or even able to produce good colors. And vr. Someone might play on projector, on a tv or a tn panel. And people like different things and have different requirements anyways. Someone wants all eye candy. Someone else turns everything off to get every last fps. Most are somewhere in the middle. Offering couple of different presets and allowing users to create their own is only a positive imho. Even if in some cases it is used to make bad mods look better I don't see it as a bad thing. Even in that situation it would improve things.

And in the end I feel more comfortable that people can make decisions for themselves. Rf2 should come out of the box with good strong defaults but in the end everything should be easily adjustable with options that are explained what they do. If hdr profiles are on by default then I'd also want more than one profile. And also an option to turn them off. One size fits all is not a good way to think if modding is the key feature of your game imho. All that said those optioin should be available in the game menus. The need to edit ini and plr files needs to stop.

RF2 with HDR on, there is not much latency. Same thing with AC if post processing effects is not on. When i turn post processing effects on in AC, it causes very noticeable latency. All this with fps locked to 120 fps
If RF2 can keep the latency as it is, i'm happy. I hope they consentrate on making RF2 look good in this low latency state, and not to waste resources on making any high latency post processing effects.

    No.

We don't compute inputs polling in the same thread used by graphics. Physics has its own. They are two different loops.

...so there is no latency added?
Sorry if I ask but I am tryng to understand how it works...

Though the overal graphic quality of AC is consistent, the lightning without Post Processing isn't. It's way too dark up to the point where I have to increase the brightness of my screen to see anything properly even mid day with some clouds. Same problem as with rF2 during sun set, though I would consider that realistic to some extend. AC has the problems that headlights don't work, so that makes it even more difficult to deal with darkness. Add to that the latency problem when you enable PP, that was mentioned by other people and you get a serious issue.

Regarding HRD profiles: I am really not sure we should go back to that route as it was a mess and I am glad ISI and Studio 397 killed it with fire. The most important thing for rF2 (and any other software) is to offer a consistent quality standard for all tracks and cars acrros the globe throughout 24 hours and in different weather conditions. If they can build upon of what they have allready and improve the weak points like shadows and headlights, aswell as night lightning (undercar shadows etc.) and missing raindrops, it would be a good step in the right direction. Another weakpoint are the replays, wich will get an overhoul aswell if I read that right.

Saturation and Gamma slider would be another topic and certainly possible.

Yes I've heard this about different threads etc
But HDR or HQ graphics etc in certain other titles does seem to increase latency noticeably for me

Maybe there is a bottleneck between the cpu - gpu that causes a bit of latency with our PC's ....there has to be

I usually run with graphic settings set well within my pc's capabilities
As a direct low latency feel is key to a good simulation experience to me

I must add I'm very sensitive to latency so it's always my first concern & one reason I go high end on pc gear & keep settings conservative also a fairly big factor in why I like VR so much
& rfactor2 has always been extreamly good (although obviously not used since the VR happening )

    ( AC much less so,
iracing was never bad & has got better in last couple of years,
rf2 has always been best )

There is always latency added from post-processing from my understanding. What @Tuttle said is right in that the physics/FFB are not delayed by HDR, but HDR will still delay what is shown on screen.

The problem is textures, even ISI tracks aren't fully consistent with color/lightness, let alone the modded tracks which are a mess, as most are not tweaked for HDR at all or very poorly, so they automatically look better if HDR is off or less aggressive. Just take as an example the track used at the Vegas Formula E event, it would have frankly looked better with HDR off.

one thing I keep forgetting to mention re.the UI -something I noticed

the option " player " that would be good if it were changed to " user "

-I think using the users description as user as opposed to player rightfully deems the software more professional

other than that the UI looks really great & modern too

    thanks for reading

I think, with all the updates for Mills, Estoril and the other tracks that we got the last year, stock rF2 tracks have a pretty consistent art style now and they look pretty good to my eyes from cockpit view. What holds them back a bit is the lightning and the weak shadows, but that's being worked on. They will never be fully consistent for reasons like Lat/Lon of the track and sun angle. There is so much stuff, that has influence on the appearance of a track that it is impossible to tackle all that perfectly and HDR profiles are just one more value that has influence on how a track looks. Just the effect, that weather has on the visuals, shouldn't be underestimated and it also influences how players percieve a certain track in a certain situation. And that's something that I find pretty incredible.

At the end I don't think that HDR profiles will safe badly executed tracks. It's better to have one consistent render technology accross the board, especialy when you want to get modded tracks and cars consistent and teach modders how to do it properly. This way you can track down mistakes much faster and sensitize people alot more efficiently on how a track or car is created properly with the recent tech at hand.

I don't know if this has already been discussed before, but is there any plan to improve the current steering rotation configuration system? At the moment there are problems with new/unsupported wheels, while a system like AC/iR/pC would be greatly appreciated: you just set your degrees of rotation and the game does the rest, adapting each car automatically.
