    I spent the weekend in Donington racing an MX5 SuperCup car.
    One of the most interesting things is comparing the pace of the various classes that raced there over the weekend.
    Slowest to fastest;
    MX5 Cup: 1:24.255 Mark 1 Mazda MX5.
    Comments: A suite of performance mods allowed but running a road standard tyre. They move around a lot on track and it's exciting racing to watch. A lot of "Rubbing is racing" with many black smudges on panel work after a race. Also a lot of engines being removed and replaced!
    Fun Cup. 1:23.159 They look like a VW Beetle but they aren't. They are a space frame chassis running a VW group 2.0 petrol engine. 4 hour races with refuelling and driver changes.
    MX5 SuperCup/SuperSeries 1:22.248 Mark 3 MX5 with some performance upgrades and running a slick with some tread.
    GTi Cup. 1:21.903 VW Gof GTi. Mark 2 and Mark 5 with a suite of performance mods.
    Porsche Cup 1:17.875 Boxster 3.2 S with quite a big splitter and rear wing and blueprinted engine and suspension mods.
    924s also run with lap times 1:24.4
    F1000 (formerly called Jedi). 1:06.691
    Space frame open wheeler with 1000cc Motorbike engine.
    Just compare those lap times. Man these things are quick! and loud. The pace is around that of Formula 3 from a car that can be had from around £15,000.
