A question: Since having the ground control points seems very important to end up with a valid point cloud, where in the campaign did you budget for them? Worst case you need to have one available every 100 meters and I am assuming you need special equipment and an experienced operator to obtain them. The quote you got mentions that you "the client" is responsible for providing this. Could you elaborate on that?

    Hi Marrs,

Sorry not to have replied earlier.

GCP's are used to provide 'absolute' accuracy for the scanned area, and to match geo-reference imaging with the point cloud in order to colour it.

For the purposes of this project absolute accuracy would be excessive data. We don't need to know the position of the start/finish line compared to the summit of Mt Everest for example. What we do need is 'relative' accuracy, i.e each measured point needs to be accurate in relation to the points around it.

The scanning system, along with the temporary GPS base-station and geo-reference image capture will more than accommodate our needs.
