Coming from LFS where I have been mouse steering for a long time, I have been very disappointed to see many new racing games not implementing this technique, which I believe gives very fine steering control (throttle is another thing though
).
I saw a couple of threads asking about it for rfactor/rfactor2 etc but no replies.
After a bit of fiddling around, I can finally say I've managed to get some form of mouse steering in rFactor2.
This method requires PPJoy to work. Dl it here: http://www.simtel.net/free/Miscellaneous-Utilities/PPJoy/75176.html
I am on Win7 x86 btw.
First thing you need to do is download PPJoy and then install it. Next go to the Control Panel. I found switched it to 'Small Icon' mode allowed me to find the proper menu more easily. You are looking for "Parallel Port Joysticks" in the list of icons. Open that and click "add" and add a "Virtual Joystick". This will install the drivers.
Next thing you need to do is to open the PPJoyMouse.exe from the PPJoy folder. This will start the emulation (you must have it running whenever you want to use Mouse as a virtual joystick).
Now we must configure Rfactor2 to use the virtual joystick as the steering input. Note: you will not be able to manually set the mouse axes to 'steer left/right'. The easiest way to do this is simply to load a Wheel configuration (in my experience, the Porsche one felt best). You can then play with the sensitivity but most importantly the "X-Axis Gain" in the PPJoyMouse menu to set the right sensitivity.
Using Pedals+Mouse steering requires just a little bit more: You must go into the .ini files and manually edit some fields. You are looking for the .ini files in /rfactor2/userdata/controllers. Open which ever one it is you are using and look for the 'Control - xxxx' fields under [ Input ].
You should notice that they look like this: Control - Throttle="(1, 3)"
This is just guesswork, but it seems the number 1 denotes that its controller 1. Search for the steer left and steer right fields, and simply change them to look like this:
Control - Steer Left="(2, 1)"
Control - Steer Right="(2, 0)"
This indicates that the steering is on the 2nd controllers axis or something.
Congratulations, you should now be able to steer with a mouse, and throttle with pedals.
Hope that this helps those they may be interested.
