Ok, I'm an expert in computing for more than 30 years now, I somewhat already know what Linux is and is not, as you said there are a lot of different distros for different use cases, just consider Windows as a "gaming use case", period.

Or use some kind of emulation, as you want but why would a gaming society spend time and money to develop for something like 0.001% of users ?

PS : some distros are free, Windows is really cheap, even free if you are in computing for long enough actually. Not to mention Microsoft is closer then ever to linux world, even DirectX is now linux compatible, so further development will reach linux world soon or later. That being said, linux was never meant for gaming, it wasn't even made for UI to begin with...

Reasons Linux won't officially be supported:
    User base of rF2: 100%
    VR User base: 3%
    Linux user base: .2%
(note: no official data to support this, just my reckoning based on faaaaaarrrrrr too much thread reading)

I've said so myself to just use proton. It already works very well, aside from some settings.

What I do question though is your comment about Linux never being meant for gaming. Windows wasn't either. Yet steamos is specifically made for gaming
