Help with a new graphic card

tjc runs a stock AMD XP6000+, DDR2 and a GTX470.

This really is great work feels...

I have everything maxed out and still getting really good fps. The track looks very nice too and has a nice flow to it.

Not really noticed any problems or bugs etc yet...

I rest my case.

I've read this thread with interest as I have a similar situation to OP.

Current specs are
CPU: Intel i3 @3.07GHz
Memory: 3gb DDR3
OS: win 7 home premium 64bit
Video: ASUS HD6770 1GB
Seat: custom built cockpit
Wheel: Logitech GT Driving Force

I run at relatively low resolution as don't have an hd display yet. I use textures full, cars high, circuit details med, low sfx and med shadows, 16x aniso and environment reflections on. HDR on and fxaa on, no AA though it absolutely kills it (together with high shadows)

I keep visible cars to 10, maybe less and have set max framerate to 62

A most circuits I find I can keep up the 60fps rate, dropping at start maybe. Some tracks are heavier on FPS but its usually driveable.

My point is you can get decent performance with avg set up. As an aside, PCARS butchers my machine and its 20-25fps at min settings and is awful on my system

However, as with the OP, is chucking money at something like a gtx560ti going to get me anywhere? I'm planning on boosting the Ram to at least 4gb anyway but do I need to step into the £200 plus gpu range to get to the next level of performance? Or will i run out of CPU before then?

Any advice grateful received

The additional system ram might help only because it would allow your system to have a larger swap file and more overhead with the ram so less info would be passed to the swap file. The i3 is not bad at 3Ghz and would even be fine with higher end cards than what you current use. The only reason I could see that you might consider the upgrade to the newer GPU would be to get the performance level you want on an HD display and most of the 7XXX cards are capable of giving you decent rates at 1920 X 1080. Obviously the more you spend on the GPU the higher the level of performance. What I would do in your situation would be to look for a GPU that has 2Gb of ram on it which will help you out if you want to push everything higher in the settings. I am not saying to get the best card and make sure it has 2Gb, but get one that you can afford and make sure it has 2Gb of ram on it.

The only reason you would have to upgrade the CPU would be if you were doing things outside gaming that were CPU intensive. The i3 does pretty good running games.

Thanks gearjammer

I'm looking to be able to switch on anti aliasing and higher shadows and all the candy really. Would a 7xxx push me into that level of performance?

There are advantage with both cards. The nVidia cards would allow for 3D where ATI doesn't, but ATI is less expensive for the performance that you get.

Hello!

I'm just before buying new graphics card into my PC, and I would like to know your opinion about which graphics card would have the best performance/price ratio with rFactor 2. I would like to choose from the following 4 VGAs:
- ATI Radeon HD 7850
- ATI Radeon HD 7870
- nVidia GeForce GTX 660
- nVidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST

As I googled on it, the 650 Ti BOOST almost have the same performance as the HD 7850.

What's your opinion/advice, which one shall I choose? :) (my PC specs on my profile)

Thanks for your help in advance!

The 650 Ti Boost costs about $20 US less than the 7850 with about the same performance, so of those two, I would go with the nVidia. The 7870 doesn't gain you a whole lot more, so that one is out. The 660 is a little better, but the price jump is not on par with the performance gain so I would still say the 650 Ti Boost is the best option.

Go with the 660, newer card. You want all the performance you can squeeze out of this update.

Either way, rF2 is infamous for running much better on Nvidia cards than ATI cards. So stick with NV

If you are not upgrading Mobo / CPU in next year or so I would agree with all above comments.

But if you want to move to Intel in 2014 I would save $100+ more, get a GTX760 OC model.

GTX760 will last a good 2 years.

Not hard to save $1 a week somehow in future ? .......... don't buy that iced donut every Saturday ? lol

Sounds silly I know, but that is how simple I look at it.
