Formula 1 in rFactor 2

    Now that the F1 season will be starting this weekend, some of us may want to try our hand at driving and racing these simulated cars. There are quite a few F1 mods available for rF2.

    There are also online racing series that are running these or other F1 cars.

    And of course there are numerous official and unofficial mods from previous generations.

    And then there are tracks available on the workshop and other sites available to race on.

    But I wanted to focus on setting up and driving a modern F1 car in rF2. And although each mod car is different, there are some similarities in setting up rF2 to get the most out of them.

    After installing a car and a track, you'll need to go into settings and assign some controls. So go to Settings, Assign Controls, Driving.

    Obviously, you'll need to have your throttle, brake, steering, etc. configured.
    Most F1 tracks available in rF2, have 1 or more DRS (Drag Reduction System) zones available. This allows you to open the rear wing to increase speed down the straight within that DRS zone. So you need to assign "Rear flap" to a button.
    Next, depending on the mod, you may need to assign controls under "Electronics" for:
    "Increment mixture" and "Decrement mixture"
    "Increment boost" and "Decrement boost"
    "Temporary boost" which will allow you to activate the highest boost level while pressing that button.
    "Engine Brake Map Up" and "Engine Brake Map Down" which will allow you to adjust the amount of deceleration available from the engine when you're off the throttle. Typically the lower the number the higher the deceleration.
    "Brake bias forward" and "Brake bias rearward"
    You may also need to assign controls for Push 2 Pass as some mods are now using the new P2P system to simulate hybrid systems.
    "Activate Push 2 Pass"
    "Check Remaining Push 2 Pass Time"
    Eventually we should have options to better simulate hybrid systems.
    Unfortunately, rF2 doesn't (yet?) support onboard adjustable differential settings which is common on modern F1 cars.
    You'll also want to make sure you've assigned controls for pit request and pit menu adjustment because you'll likely need to make a pit stop, not to refuel, which hasn't been allowed in F1 since 2010, but to change tires, since current regulations require at least one pit stop and at least 2 of the 3 tire compounds to be used during the race.

    About tires, F1 currently uses Soft (red sidewall), Medium (yellow sidewall) and Hard (white sidewall) during the race. But Pirelli (official tire supplier) has 5 compounds (6 for 2023) available from which they nominate the three compounds for Soft, Medium and Hard depending on the track. Those compounds are labelled C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5 (also C0 for 2023) with the hardest C1 (C0 for 2023) and the softest C5.

    @Bill Worrel May i suggest you to add formula PRO to the cars list. Tyres are most likely realistic on this one compared to other F1. Looks wise is also most relevant to current F1. I honestly believe it is closest thing to modern F1 in RF2 apart from hybrid ( which is no big deal imo , that glorious V10 ).

    I meant to and I will. But I do think that there are other mods that are coming a lot closer to the new tires on S397 cars. And I think a lot of online series are not running the Formula Pro because of the V10. It's too much for most people to handle. At least that's what I've heard and I've also struggled with it compared to other mods.

    I think S397 missed an opportunity to add hybrid to that car. Maybe they still will eventually.

    struggling to drive and be fast on F1 like car is exact reason why it is good, avg sim race like us will hardly reach skills levels of pro F1 driver or top end open wheel race cars, these cars are supposed to be driven by only best otherwise it death trap.
    such a shame that people give up for such reasons though , im slow with this car too....but this is exactly why we are here to learn and experience top end machineries.
