I noticed that on the Williams cars the drivers arms break through the chassis so you can see them when the driver turns the wheel. Only on onboard exterior cam
 
Nigel Mansell raced the first seq shift F1 at Rio in 1989. He was so convinced it would break he booked an early flight out before the race would end. He won the race, and missed the BA flight.
I watched a nice special on YT about John Barnard. Originally for Sky I think. He explained how the sequential hydro-pneumatic shifter came about.
It was surprisingly just about packaging, not about driver efficiency. He always found that finding a way to route the gear shift linkages a pain. So started experimenting.
Not only was Mansell pessimistic, they actually had to do the first ever steering wheel swap in a pit stop when the wheel nearly fell off.
They had practiced it but didn't know if all the electronics would work!
