Active H-shifters: where we've been and where we are going

BDH dropped a software update today (Aug 1) that activates sequential mode (woot!) and enables some other features that were promised earlier. I had just torn apart the shifter mount this morning for creating a new shifter mount that lets me swap from one side to the other, so annoyingly won't be able to test the update for maybe a week. My timing is occasionally rotten.

The MVH Bash HSX shifter is back in stock after another limited production run. [27 September 2026 update: it appears MVH has gone to individual production now rather than limited production runs, but you can't order one (again) at present. So maybe they're still making these in batches.]

To my mind, this is one drawback to any of the MVH models. If you don't catch MVH during a limited production run, then you might not ever get one whereas BDH will accept your order and put you in a queue. On the other hand, while BDH has some features I highly appreciate (gear pattern and mounting options), the MVH software appears more mature. The BDH price is certainly daunting!

From BDH on Facebook yesterday:

WARNING TO ACTIVE SHIFTER OWNERS
We have become aware of an issue when using the Sequential mode on the Active shifter.
This issue damages a crucial internal part.
We ask all of you to refrain from using Sequential mode please. We are working on a solution and will update as soon as possible.
Many thanks
Team BDH

Did you damage anything on yours?
Nope.

Over the past two months, I created a slick mounting system using linear rails that lets me swap the shifter from right side of the cockpit to left side (and vice versa) at will. Takes about two minutes. Will post about it in a couple weeks...

The BDH post on Facebook about Sequential mode has been removed. I'll email them to confirm status.

I'd like you to try the MVH and to compare it with the BDH. Besides the most clear, the ffb on the whole system, one thing I miss in mine is a faster dogbox gear engagement. In some cars I cannot get to shift gear as fast as some onboard videos I've seen on the same car with no engagement delay configured.

Status of sequential mode per Harvey of BDH Customer Support:

Firstly, we would recommend avoiding sequential mode, just for the time being. It
has been heavily linked with causing accelerated internal wear on a specific part,
but not in all units so its tough to say if your unit would be alright or not.

The good news is that we have almost completed production of a brand new part that
has so far successfully negated this wear. We will be putting the new part into
circulation within the next week or two, which anyone with an effected unit can
have access to.

Trying to train my muscle memory to use a shifter on the left... it's not going very well, LOL. Upshifts are okay, but my brain falls apart on the downshifts.

Hopefully will post pics/video of the mount soon. I timed a swap between sides and it took 3 minutes, no tools required.
