Is there a way to make more than 4.5 cars show headlights yet? I remember first seeing this issue a long, long time a go. It's so immersion breaking to see the car in front having it's headlights flicker on and off when cars behind catch you up and things.

I hope it will be possible to do something about it in future.....or that I have a setting wrong?

Yeah, this is indeed an immersion breaker... Would be sweet to have it adjustable a la visible cars....

I consider today's headlights very much a WIP. Just like almost everything within the sim has or will have an overhaul.

Same with the headlights, or at least I hope.

My wet dream when it comes to headlights is how they seem to perform in for example Forza 6. In 0:25 you can see how well it looks around Spa at night.

(You can also get a glimpse of how the rain on a windshield looks like. Sth similar in rF2 would be more than enough for me. Driveclub though... Really set the bar high for pure visual effects of raindrops on windshield)

I know that right now headlights are limited to how they are set to work within the engine so making them work in a different, better way will require ISI to rework many code lines. I hope it will happen someday. rF2 really needs some polish in that department. Night racing has become a lot more fun after 946 with new tone mapper. With another baby steps in the direction to provide us with proper feeling and immersion while driving at night, racing at night I think we might end up one day with something that will really deserve showing off.

I very much look forward to improved headlights as well and think the video shows a great example of its application.

On a side note, something that we probably will see in rf2 one day, the aquaplaning at 1.41, that looked cool[emoji3]

Maybe there are 2 different things. One, with the number of shown Headlights and second, the distance, where Headlights are shown. I guess, for the second one, there is no fix/adjustment at the moment.

//Edit: you may could play with this value a bit:

    It`s from player.json, too.

DirectX9 IIRC. There's a light source limit... or something.

It was something I read on this forums last year. I guess it wasn't true.

Ehmm, there ARE no actual lights in Race07 - hence why there exists NO night racing or dynamic lightning.

It's just plain material switching between two textures :p

(IIRC) There can only be a max of 16 spot lights (I.E. headlights) per rendered object. This, I believe, is hard-coded into the rendering pipeline.

There are techniques to render many more lights, but most of them involve deferred lighting. This would require a MAJOR overhaul of the rendering engine.

I would LOVE to see this happen. IMO, the night lighting is the weakest link in this game's graphics potential.

This is how night lighting 'should' be handled, ideally:

No, GSCE doesnt have the problem.

The setting people keep mentioning does absolutely nothing to fix it either.

Rfactor2 is using "real" lights, older gMotor2 games are using "projection lights" (texture based)
