Yes. Don't know exactly how this worked in 1978 but there was a pop-off valve that limited the amount of boost. Rumor was that AJ Foyt always got a "special" pop-off valve at Indy later in his career.
Penske won Indy with the "just inside the rules' stock block in 1994. The next year, his two series champs couldn't even qualify. Some pop-off valves, which were tightly controlled by the USAC series, could pop open earlier than expected. Robbing power down those long Indy straights.
That Chaparral would have made Al Unser Sr a 5 time winner of the Indy 500 if they had sorted out the cooling completely. But then if Andy Granatelli's Jet car was built to last, Mario Andretti would have won a decade earlier.
Mmmm 1978, my fav mod in rF1 was F1 of 1979, I wonder what Indy car of that era was like. I know little about indycar, I am surprised to find that they raced in Europe
Seems that only 5 T500's were ever built, with Tom Bigelow, Janet Guthrie and Roger McCluskey running one in 1979, and Unser running a Pennzoil liveried car until the Chaparall was finished. Jerry Sneva drove one in in 1980: http://www.canamcarsltd.com/car/1979-Lola-T500-HU5-IndyCar https://theracerhead.com/jim-hall-al-unser-indy-500-winner-chaparral-lola-t500/ http://mb2501.proboards.com/thread/3865/lola-t500-1-24-version
Yes sir, great so far, looking forward to driving this one..... need a 78' version of Indy to drive it on.
