    lol nice upgrade.

I wonder why you old mobo couldn't make it work. If your BIOS settings were correct and you were not using any other PCI express device then it sounds like the mobo was defective.

Did you try "Load Optimized Defaults" in the BIOS?

The old motherboard manual doesn't indicate any reasons the first slot wouldn't run x16, and there aren't any BIOS options that would slow it down like that. Strange one but either something very obscure or a hardware issue (contacts, board damage - assuming the card works properly in the new one :D)

*Still feels very unnatural for me to 'quickly' replace a motherboard which is modern enough to have an m.2 slot, but then I just upgraded this year for the first time since 2010 so that's me...

I've would try even a system restore to test if it was cause by some software, cleaning contacs both from mobo and gpu, test power cable from power supply to gpu.... everything i could imagine before buying a new one. I wouldnt accept the "just stopped working"
Like the time i got viruses on pc. I probably format my pc 2 or 3 times in life. And not for viruses issues. In other hand, spend more time doing that than sleeping :D

Tested in new board and immediately it informed x16, so I think there's something wrong with either the CPU or Main board

    Unfortunately it was...
    Mobo BR$1400
    32 Gb Memory BR$1600
    Proc BR$2050
    Total about US$1300

But the benchmarks I've been seen on Youtube are proving 4790K pretty much bottlenecks a 1080ti, same GPU the 8700K provides from 20 to 50 plus FPS depending on game, let alone my work applications which will take brutal advantage from 6 cores @ 4.8 Ghz

I think is fixed. The funny thing is Project Cars 2 gains only 20%-22% FPS which is probably from the CPU upgrade 4790K->8700K while rF2 has gained 220%, certainly not only from CPU upgrade. Same GPU both assemblies.

Why rF2 is so sensitive to PCI speed is a mistery.

@ECAR_Tracks I'm sure there is some technical reason the engine is so sensitive, though to be fair x4 should have been an issue in some other games as well. x8 -> x16 is generally less of an improvement in most games, but not rF2.

More than anything I'm just happy you didn't find out the GPU was broken when you bought 3/4 of a new PC to throw it in :D

@Will Mazeo I don't know if ECAR actually meant work (as in, paid job) but here at least when you use your PC a large part of the time for work purposes, you can claim some of the costs of maintaining/upgrading it as a tax deduction (a percentage of those costs, in line with the percentage of PC use that is dedicated to your work). Obviously that's open to interpretation and potentially a little abuse, so it's something you'd probably consult your accountant about to avoid having the tax office knocking on your door later :) (tax deduction doesn't mean you get all the money back, but depending on income you could get 20-40% back) But now I'm very much off topic...

I know what you meant, and that's why I said I'm not sure this exists here in Brazil, as far as I can remember it does not (for business/work).

If PCIe 3.0@ x16 is used I think your FPS gain 20%-22% has with clock speed to do. If you run 4790K and 8700K with same clock speed games like pCars, AC, rF2 etc it is hard to measure any FPS improvement at all.

Actually there's no taxes advantage on buying for work purposes, here's Brazil, a land where they do what they can to make your life and your job as difficult as possible.
