400 hz should be the rate of the FFB output, variable the rate of the FFB input, model dependant.

What do you mean model dependent? Vehicle?
    Where is this value defined?

I would have said that steering, throttle, brake... all work at the same frequency as the FFB output. I could be wrong though.

After watching this forum for a few years it is apparent that few people know that search engines exist.
Search terms: frequency FFB output rFactor2

    In first result: https://forum.studio-397.com/index.php?threads/physics-ffb-rates-upgrade.54771/

Same question about the update frequency of the physics engine (I admit not knowing much about it).

In the idea of being able to really benefit from the contribution of the scanned laser, provided that it is realized with a great precision, and has more than 150 km/h, I presume that it would be a very important advance in physics of RF2.

Provided that the impact on performance remains relatively limited.

Physics runs at minimum 400Hz (otherwise there wouldn't be much point providing 400Hz FFB), and it's been stated previously by ISI/S397 that parts of the tyre model run at 2400Hz. We don't know which parts, and whether that would directly impact the ability of the physics model to take advantage of a fine mesh track model you might get from a laser scan, but I would guess our computers aren't able to properly take advantage of that sort of detail anyway (with any game). Laser scanning's real advantage is more confidence in the accuracy of the track layout and undulations rather than having all the correct micro deviations.

So personally I don't see any need for an advance in this area of rF2. I think what we have is sufficient and much more useful gains are to be made elsewhere.

Does this sort of triangle count make a difference for the FFB/physics?
Why would the other games choose to have this invisible mesh just for the physics?

I may be less knowledgeable than you, but I do not agree totally with you.

Only S397 can really know anyway.

It does not bother me not to feel the micro bumps at 200 km/h, because of a frequency of updating the FFB "too low".

On the other hand, if there can be an improvement of the physics, at 200 km / h, on a circuit with the mesh very detailed, it is good.

On the other hand, as you say, much bigger gains in other areas.

@DrivingFast Yeah, I understand what you're saying. I just think in reality no game is actually simulating how each of those tiny bumps is influencing the tyre (and onto the suspension) when you're driving along at 50+m/s, because our computers can't do it. Look at rF2: it moves a lot of its calculations out of realtime by building lookup tables, but there's no way it can 'look up' how the tyre in its current state should react to 3 different height points at their x,y positions (relative to the contact patch) because those lookup tables can't possibly cover all the combinations of current state and new point data input. Games that try to do everything in realtime are necessarily even less capable of doing so.

So for me it's a nice marketing exercise but makes very little difference in practice. What it does help with is knowing that the height of where you are right now is more accurate, and for that 400Hz is more than enough.

Reading inputs, calculating physics and sending force feedback is all done at 400 Hz. The tyres run at 2400 Hz (including their contact with the road).

Search engines do not guarantee reliable information will be found. The thread you pointed at said that input was being read at a different speed to FFB which Marcel just denied.

Does the game work in a similar fashion to this other "terrain server" from the rfpro company?

Not that I understand if it is better or not.

If we assume a track width of 10m, the upper mesh equates to a distance between points of around 0.4m, the lower mesh to around 1m. At 50 m/s with a physics rate of 333 Hz, the position of the car on the track should be calculated every 0.15m. The higher density mesh used in the upper track is certainly not wasted in terms of the physics.

@David Wright But, the lower mesh (assuming rF2) isn't actually what you're driving on. There's randomised 'noise' overlaid on those polys which gives your suspension a similar workout to the top mesh - maybe even more dense. But then I'm assuming the top one is used as is - maybe they also add extra noise.

Regarding bumps, the question becomes: is a 1m grid enough to represent bumps? At high speeds I'd imagine it is (even the bumps you feel at 80kph on a slightly washboarded motorway are actually quite long), while with low speeds (and the smaller bumps which then become apparent) it perhaps isn't. But you probably don't need to make the mesh much smaller to represent those, and quite often on slower tighter turns the mesh ends up being finer anyway - especially on the inside where the racing line usually is.

There's always diminishing returns for this type of stuff, so it's dangerous to look at two meshes and think you're missing out when you don't have the more detailed one.
