As I've previously discussed in another thread... I was going to upgrade my PC 6 months ago, but I thought I'd wait until the price of a 1080Ti has come down a bit. I was wrong. Prices are now between £900 and £1000 here in the UK which has taken it beyond what I'm prepared to pay for a single component. I built a full PC 5 years ago for £900 (which was no slouch) and, if I'm not mistaken, inflation hasn't risen that massively since. GPUs seem to be up about 50%. So is there a solution to this? Or are we now stuck with massively inflated prices? If manufacturers increase supply, surely the miners will just buy them all up to make more cryptocurrecy, pushing prices even higher. Bill Gates has said cryptocurrency isn't going anywhere so I guess all we can hope for is a massive crash in it's value, but it's not going to disappear. It just seems ludicrous to me that a 'graphics card' is not being used for graphics, but is pushing the prices out of the reach of people who want to use them for graphics!

One solution is to pay the inflated prices and then use the card to mine crypto-currency for yourself. If you can't beat them, join them!
The only way to pay a fair price in a GPU (at least here in Brazil) is buying a full machine, some shops manage to keep the prices of the card down if sold that way. Selling only the card with normal price becomes hard when 1 person alone buy 40+ cards
You can buy directly from the makers, but I think they sell out fast. Nvidia sells the 1070ti for $499, closets on newegg is $589, going up to $1299.
You are probably better off waiting for Nvidia Volta generation. With a new GPU generation, even if you won't get hold of a new model, it almost always will reduce the price of the previous generation flagships and miners will probably get more interested in the new cards as well rather than old ones.
Just wait it out. Cryptocurrency is a scam and has no inherent value. Bitcoin has already crashed hard and will eventually reach zero, along with all the other Ponzicoins. For now, invest your GPU money in gold. It's actually worth something.
Had a guy the other day trying to sell me this Bitcoin dream get rich quick Ponzi scheme. I don't buy it, there's a reason my money is in a bank: It's safe in there. Bitcoin is another 3D phase. 3DTV came and went, Bitcoin has already come and gone As with anything digital it can be hacked. My question is- Why GPUs? I don't get any of this so whenever anyone tries to sell me this thing I just stand there and nod.
this may help if being done https://www.extremetech.com/computi...w-cryptocurrency-gpus-relieve-consumer-market
Maybe, but just maybe there'll be an end for GPU based mining, when dedicated ASICs start taking over. https://www.hardocp.com/news/2018/04/09/ethereum_asic_has_performance_8_gtx_1080s_for_800/ for Bitcoin: https://www.bitcoinmining.com/bitcoin-mining-hardware/
Wasn't there a talk about changing the codes so these machines wont mine "too fast"? Saw something like that a few days ago, I could be mistaken
You're right, Will. There's indeed a discussion going on to fork/change the Ethereum code: https://github.com/ethereum/EIPs/issues/958 I guess, only time will tell...
Next business networking meeting where someone tries to sell me this Bitcoin get rich quick scheme... It's 3DTV all over again.
There might be a tiny shimmering light at the end of the tunnel: https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20180425PD205.html Here in Germany, prices already started dropping over the last few weeks: http://www.3dcenter.org/news/grafikkarten-strassenpreise-fallen-innerhalb-von-drei-wochen-um-13 Cheers! Max
Wow... maybe that's one way to look at it, but I find your statement pretty ignorant. Do you even know that your current system would be capable of mining without any additional expenses ?
It will not last to long Market will equalise Hold off for a while but keep eyes open for a fair priced gpu in meantime
there's more to it than just that... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptocurrency Admittedly, the amount of spam mails is beyond believe, but don't you think that there's a reason that even the biggest banks started using crypto currency for their transactions ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripple_(payment_protocol) https://www.express.co.uk/finance/c...s-national-bank-abu-dhabi-ripple-transactions
The tech behind crypto currencies imo is it biggest asset The Block chain tech I bet will be introduced into conventional financial systems around this point crypto bubble will crash & die away
