    Hi and welcome!

First of all: what wheel do you use?
    Most needed button-functions are:
    -speed limiter
    -LCD display mode
    -look left/right
    -look behind
    -pitstop request
    -seat adjustment (forward/aft)

You can make different profiles to suit different cars and/or race scenarios.
For example if you're driving a modern F1 you would most likely want DRS etc at your fingertips.
It all depends on how many buttons are on your wheel.
As the others have mentioned there are some vital controls needed.
One of the best and first items to buy or build is a button box.

I have a 8 inch touchscreen with the program Touchbuddy running on it.
Basically it use pictures of buttons / switches etc that when touched emulate keyboard stokes or combinations of keyboard strokes.
I only use it now for seat and mirror adjustment and camera controls in replays.
I'm sure there are virtual boxes out there.

This is a little more involved, but I built my own button box that attaches directly to my G27. It uses a Teensy microprocessor and is seen as another keyboard. I originally built it for F1 2016, but I've abandoned that and use it for RF2. It's fully programmable, so it can do macros. Right now, I'm running the USF2000 cars and there just aren't that many buttons to program (no drs, no diff, no fuel mix, no pit limiter. Here's a pix of it with labels from F1 2016. http://i.imgur.com/V55nhr0.jpg .

Generic cheap Chinese 8 inch from Ebay. USB connection for touch and VGA analogue port for video. 800x600 resolution is preferred for Touchbuddy
