Just want to ask, whats the best way of doing this? I've tried Sketchup, it resizes the walls when reimported I've tried Maya, it extrudes individual faces in different directions Whats the best way?
Look for something called shell. That's what you would use in max, maya is made by the same people, so it probably has a similar tool.
When you click on the extrude icon, there is a popup window where you can adjust some settings. One of them is "keep faces together". It's ON by default... But this only works if all faces are "connected". ==> All vertex need to be welded together first. Edit: don't forget to deatch "hard edges" edges ontop of the wall for example.

Because they are extruding per face... by their face normal and not by the selection? There might be a "shell like" modifier built into Maya. I have only used 3dsmax so far though.
There are plenty of free scripts out there. Maybe scriptspot.com has one. Extrude normally works properly in most cases.

There is no need for a "shell" tool to do this. Just an extrude will do the job fine. The wall/fence Mesh needs to be cleaned up first before you can apply a tool in Maya or a Modifer in Max. IMO: i would recreate the wall and fence. It's much easier to do then fixing an excisting mesh and possibly faster too.

Extruding does not create proper mapping coords on extruded face. You need to remap all extruded faces with some 3D modelling application. In the end, its much faster and easier remodel all these "paper flat walls" from scratch than extrude/remap existing ones.
3dsimed isn't sufficient to add new UV maps, it adjusts current ones as far as I am aware. If you "loft" a wall from a spline, you will be able to spline map the wall. Even the loft has options on UV mapping and repetition. I only have experience of 3dsmax (unsure how it does this in Maya though, sorry).
I'll be the third one to say it : redo them from scratch, it's better. And forget lofting, look for "path deform" instead (in 3dsmax, no idea in Maya).
