Apologies if this is someplace, I looked and couldn't find a clear answer.

Does the icon.dds and smicon.dds have to be a .dds? I tried replacing with icon.jpeg in the mas file, saved, then created a package. All went well, it installed, but when I go to select the series it is using what looks to be a default rF2 icon (different than the default icon if you don't change it at all).

Can someone confirm if those icons have to be in dds format? Thanks. :)

Stupid question :D: why don't you simply use DDS when jpeg don't works?

DDS requires a plugin from Nvidia that I'm having trouble to get working in PaintShop Pro. The UI pdf from ISI has .psd icon samples, those are paintshop files. I haven't tried that yet but will today.

Thanks for the helpful responses though...

    Have you tried this?

    Here is a good tutorial.

@Juergen, yes yes my bad, photoshop files, I can save as that in paintshop pro.

@redapg, yes good point, the main ui is built of TGAs and BMPs and I can save my icon as a TGA so will give that a go. Got too busy yesterday to try anything.

@Tosch, thank you Sir! I'm about as foreign to graphics stuff as possible. I'll take a look at that if the TGA format doesn't work.

I was content I managed to hack the background image in Windows Media Center, messing with the rF2 UI and making new rfmods with custom icons is a bit more challenging. My end goal is to build a few rfmods, e.g. a FR3.5 series, using some custom icons, and apply a slightly different theme to the UI.

Appreciate the replies and help! Cheers. :)

The older ISI content were using DDS, dxt 5 with alfa, the newer mods are simplified to dxt 1 without alfa, 1024x1024 for icon, and 512x512 for smicon.

Tosch, you are a prince among men. That tool and how to doc made this a couple minutes work. I have my icon.dds in the sim working for my rfmod.

Petra, big thanks as well, I would have not know what to do with the dxt level.

My first icon: (nothing amazing but working on buidling the skills)

I'm happy that it works for you. :D

Another very useful tool (at least for me, especially when I edit tracks with lots of textures) is Sagethumbs, because of the dds thumbnail view in Windows explorer and the extended info tips (shows the DXT format of the file).

As far as i know ICON.DDS and SMICON.DDS can be just the same.

    ICON.DDS is used for offline
    SMICON.DDS is used in multiplayer.

smicon is not small icon.

SMICON.DDS being used in multiplayer as opposed to ICON.DDS in single player was a bug in the 930 UI that was fixed with build 946. There is now no more need to add a SMICON.DDS as it was only used in the old pre-930 UI (it was used for this icon, to be precise).
